Set in an idyllic spot surrounded by stunning countryside, this traditional, single-storey timber lodge is large and welcoming. Inside, the spacious living area is the focal point of the property. This fantastic open-plan space has full-width bifold doors that offer wonderful views. At the far end of the room is a neat and well-equipped kitchen/dining area complete with a breakfast bar for morning coffee and a large dining table where guests can get together over a meal after a day out exploring. The lounge area, which is furnished with inviting large, leather sofas, is the perfect spot to relax and take in the view. On cooler days, the wood burner will ensure everyone keeps warm and cosy. From the living area, guests will find the four comfortable bedrooms, each furnished with soft, luxurious bedding and full of rustic charm, with exposed timber walls and stone floors. The two bathrooms – one with shower only – are stylish and contemporary in design.
Stepping outside, the lovely decked area has a fantastic countryside vista. On warm days, guests can relax on comfortable chairs or sun themselves on the loungers, and a barbecue provides the opportunity for al fresco meals in the sunshine. At the side of the lodge there is a lawned area, ideal for children or guests with a dog. With miles of walks and cycle rides available straight from the door, this spacious and comfortable lodge is ideal for a group of friends or a family seeking some fresh air and relaxation in the glorious North Pennines. Set in beautiful Cumbria, the lodge is just a mile from the delightful town of Alston and 30 miles from the city of Carlisle. Historically the area was a major centre of lead mining, as well as limestone and sandstone quarrying. Today, the North Pennines is recognised as an AONB and has also been designated a UNESCO Global Geopark, offering over 700 square miles of fascinating geology and spectacular countryside with rolling hills, heather moorlands and woodlands to explore.
Nearby Alston is renowned as the highest town in England, sitting around 1000 metres above sea level. Historically the heart of the mining community, today it is a thriving market town, with pretty cobbled streets lined with charming stone cottages. In the central square you will find a selection of interesting shops and pubs where you enjoy a leisurely lunch after a morning’s walk. Visitors can learn more about the area’s mining past at Nenthead Mines, where you can visit Carrs Mine and see the minerals and mining equipment on display and even take a tour down into the mine itself.
Lovers of the great outdoors will find themselves in a true paradise, with superb walking and cycling opportunities close by. Guests keen to get on their walking boots will appreciate the proximity of the North Pennine Way at Alston as well as the South Tyne Trail which leads back to the source of the River Tyne South, 9.5 miles away. Stop off for a pub lunch at Garrigill village before continuing to the stunning Ashgill Force waterfall. Hardier climbers may want to take on the slopes of Cross Fell, the highest point in the Pennines at nearly 900 metres.
The charming market town of Hexham, just over the border into Northumberland, is also well worth a visit. At the heart of this attractive town is the superb medieval abbey. Admire the fantastic architecture and pay a visit to the abbey’s interactive exhibition, the Big Story, before enjoying a stroll around the attractive Abbey gardens. The town is also home to a wide selection of interesting independent shops, cafes and restaurants, perfect for a leisurely lunch break. At Excellence Luxury Villas we pride ourselves on going that little bit further for our guests.
