Locals want you to know that there is more to Sardinia than its beaches. But it’s pretty hard to take your eyes off the crystal clear waters of the Med, in secluded coves, lapping at swathes of sand and crashing along the rugged coastal cliffs. Sardinians are right though, there is more. The island’s main hub, Cagliari, is packed with buzzing restaurants, art galleries, and archaeological sites. The narrow streets of Alghero, a Catalan enclave, are lined with shops and restaurants while an ancient bastion looks on. In the centre of the island, roads wind through the rugged hinterland where sheep bells clang along the hillsides. Sardinia might be famous for maggoty cheese (it’s a delicacy, honestly), but the island’s farmsteads produce some other ultra-local delights like crisp Vermentino wines, perfect with the fresh seafood of the fishing village trattorias. Hillside hikes will see you discovering ancient ruins, and coastal pathways join secluded, turquoise bays. If diving is your thing, there are shipwrecks sunken off the coast, and even Roman ruins beneath the surface of Sardinia’s sparkling sea.
