Pool villas on two warm seas, from Koh Samui and Phuket to Phang Nga Bay, Hua Hin and the river in Bangkok
As featured in
Thailand has two coasts, and each has its own weather. The Andaman Sea in the west gives you Phuket, Krabi and the limestone towers of Phang Nga Bay. The Gulf of Thailand in the east gives you Koh Samui, Hua Hin and quieter islands towards Cambodia. Their rainy seasons fall at different times of year, so you can find sunshine somewhere for most of the year if you choose the coast carefully.
Our Thai collection runs to 580+ properties. Most are pool villas on Samui and Phuket and around Krabi, with family houses in Hua Hin and suites and apartments in Bangkok hotels for a few nights in the city before or after the beach. The largest villas have 15 bedrooms, with room for several generations under one roof.
What follows is a guide to the islands, the capital and the calendar. In Thailand the calendar matters more than almost anything else.

Rent Baan Ikustaka Thailand6 bedroomsKoh Samui and Bo Phut for easy island life on the Gulf, Phuket for the west coast beaches and the old town, Phang Nga and Krabi for the limestone bay and its islands, Hua Hin for a seaside town near the capital, and Bangkok for the river.

Samui is the Gulf's best known island. It is green, hilly and ringed with beaches, and its little airport means you can step off the plane within an hour or so of Bangkok. The north coast is where many of our villas are. Bo Phut has the Fisherman's Village, a strip of old wooden shophouses that now holds restaurants and a weekly night market, and Mae Nam, next door, is quieter, with a long, calm beach.
A boat trip to Ang Thong Marine National Park, a scatter of jungle-covered islands and lagoons off the west coast, makes the best day out. Afterwards, Big Buddha on the northeast tip is at its finest at sunset.

Phuket is Thailand's largest island, and it has more variety than its reputation suggests. Most villa life happens on the west coast, from Kamala and the long sweep of Bang Tao at Choeng Thale down to Karon and Rawai in the south. Patong is the loud one, and easy to avoid.
Phuket Town is the surprise. Its old quarter of painted Sino-Portuguese shophouses comes from the tin-mining boom, and its Hokkien heritage shows in the cooking, with mee hokkien noodles and moo hong, a slow-braised pork belly. Each autumn the town holds its Vegetarian Festival, which is noisy, devout and unlike anything else in the country.

Between Phuket and Krabi lies Phang Nga Bay, where sheer karst islands rise straight out of shallow, sheltered water. A long-tail boat or a sea kayak through its caves and lagoons is one of the great days anywhere in Southeast Asia. In the middle of the bay, Ko Yao Noi has rubber plantations, a few small resorts and a pace of life that has hardly changed.
On the Krabi side, Railay is cut off by cliffs and can only be reached by boat, and it is a favourite with rock climbers. Ao Nang is the jumping-off point for the islands, and Koh Lanta, further south, is long, laid-back and good for families.

The Andaman coast is at its best from November to April. The southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher seas from May to October. Samui follows a different pattern: its wettest months are usually October to December, so it often makes the better choice in summer. Hua Hin, closer to Bangkok, has a drier climate than either.
Songkran, the Thai New Year in mid-April, turns the whole country into a cheerful water fight, and Loy Krathong, usually in November, fills rivers and the sea with candlelit floats. Southern cooking is hotter than the Thai food you know from home, so try gaeng som, a sour curry, and massaman. Our concierge can arrange cooking classes, boat charters, spa treatments and tables at the best places to eat.

Island-hopping boat charters, kayaking in Phang Nga Bay, Thai cooking classes, in-villa massage, temple guides in Bangkok, restaurant reservations and transfers from Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi and Samui airports. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Koh Samui and Phuket have the widest choice of pool villas. Phang Nga and Krabi suit those who want limestone scenery and island boat trips, and Hua Hin is a relaxed seaside town around three hours by road from Bangkok. Many guests spend a few nights in Bangkok first.
It depends on the coast. Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga are best from November to April. Koh Samui is usually driest from around January to August, with most of its rain from October to December. That makes Samui a good choice for a summer holiday.
Songkran is the Thai New Year, celebrated nationally from 13 to 15 April. It begins with temple visits and blessings and soon becomes a countrywide water fight. Expect to get soaked if you go out, and book early, because it is a busy holiday.
