Villas in the Dominican Republic

Palm-fringed sand, merengue and the oldest city in the Americas

The Dominican Republic covers the eastern two thirds of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti. Its south-eastern corner has some of the longest beaches in the Caribbean, pale sand with coconut palms behind it and calm, clear water in front. Inland and along the coast there is far more than beaches: Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone, sugar country around La Romana, and humpback whales off Samaná each winter.

Our collection runs to 170+ villas and apartments, most of them along the south-east coast. They include family villas within Casa de Campo, beach houses at Cap Cana, Bávaro, Macao and Uvero Alto, and a handful near Nagua on the quieter north coast. Many have private pools and sea views, and the largest has 13 bedrooms.

The notes below cover the coast, the country beyond it and the best months to come.

Where to stay in the Dominican Republic

La Romana and Casa de Campo for golf, the marina and family villas, Cap Cana for gated beachfront living, Bávaro and Punta Cana for long beaches close to the airport, and Higüey for a look at the island's spiritual heart.

La Romana & Casa de Campo

Fairways by the sea and a village of stone

Casa de Campo, just east of La Romana, is a large gated resort of villas, beaches, polo fields and a marina. Its best-known course, Teeth of the Dog, was designed by Pete Dye, and several of its holes run right along the Caribbean shore. Golfers tend to come back to it year after year.

On the cliffs above the Chavón River sits Altos de Chavón, a village built in the 1970s in the style of a sixteenth-century Mediterranean town, with cobbled lanes, artisans' workshops and an open-air amphitheatre. Boats leave for Isla Catalina, a small island known for its snorkelling. La Romana's own airport is only a few minutes from the resort gates.

The long beaches of the east

The eastern tip of the island is where the beaches go on longest. Bávaro has miles of soft sand and calm water inside the reef. Cap Cana, to the south, is a gated community with its own marina, the sweep of Juanillo beach and Punta Espada, a Jack Nicklaus course laid out along the clifftops.

To the north, Macao is one of the few beaches on this coast left largely undeveloped, and it has the island's best-known surf break for beginners. Beyond it, Uvero Alto is quieter again. Most villas here are within a short drive of Punta Cana airport, which makes this the easiest part of the country to reach after a long flight.

Beyond the Beach

Islands, a basilica and the first cathedral

Saona Island, inside the Parque Nacional del Este, is the classic day out by catamaran or speedboat, with shallow, clear water where starfish lie on the sand. Inland, Higüey is home to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, a soaring modernist building where pilgrims arrive from all over the country every 21 January.

Santo Domingo makes a good day trip from La Romana. Its Colonial Zone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds the oldest cathedral in the Americas and the Alcázar de Colón, the palace of Columbus's son Diego, along with streets of colonial houses that now hold cafés and small museums.

Food, Music & the Seasons

La bandera, merengue and the whale months

Lunch for most Dominicans is la bandera, meaning rice, beans and stewed meat. Breakfast is often mangú, mashed green plantain with pickled red onion, and sancocho, a thick meat stew, is what people cook for family gatherings. Drink the local rum or an ice-cold Presidente, and treat the mamajuana, rum steeped with bark and herbs, with some caution. Merengue and bachata are on every radio and both are on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage.

December to April is dry, sunny and the busiest season. From January to March humpback whales come into Samaná Bay to breed. The hurricane season runs from June to November. Our concierge can arrange tee times, boat trips, whale watching and airport transfers.

Why book your Dominican Republic villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

The Dominican Republic's villas are spread from La Romana to Cap Cana, Bávaro and the north coast, and we know which are close to a calm swimming beach, which suit golfers and how long each transfer takes. With 170+ properties in the Dominican Republic, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Tee times at Casa de Campo and Cap Cana, catamaran trips to Saona Island, whale watching in Samaná Bay, a private chef, nannies and transfers from Punta Cana or La Romana. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
