Bastides and stone mas with pools, between Cézanne's mountain, the Luberon hill villages and the sea at Cassis
As featured in
Aix-en-Provence is the elegant one in Provence. It is a university and market town of honey-coloured stone and shaded squares, with a fountain on almost every corner. Cézanne was born here and painted the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, east of town, again and again. Every July since 1948 it has staged one of Europe's leading opera festivals.
Our collection runs to 140+ villas. You will find bastides on the edge of town, restored mas among vineyards and olive groves in the Pays d'Aix, and larger family houses in the Luberon villages around Apt and Lacoste. Most have private pools, and the largest have up to 16 bedrooms.
Below you will find the town, the countryside worth basing yourself in, and the months when the markets and the light are at their best.

Aix is a town best taken on foot. The Cours Mirabeau is a broad avenue of plane trees and café terraces. It divides the medieval old town, with its knot of lanes and little squares, from the Quartier Mazarin, laid out in the seventeenth century with grand hôtels particuliers. Halfway along, a mossy fountain runs with naturally warm spring water.
The Musée Granet has a small group of Cézannes among its collection. The Hôtel de Caumont, an eighteenth-century mansion, holds fine exhibitions and serves lunch and tea in its garden. Villas on the edge of town keep all of this within a short drive, with the quiet of the countryside when you get back.

East of Aix, the white limestone ridge of Sainte-Victoire dominates the landscape. Its southern slopes are planted with the vines of Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire, and villages such as Trets and Puyloubier sit in the plain below. The walk up to the Croix de Provence is the classic morning out, best started early before the heat.
To the north, Rognes is a quiet stone village known for its truffle fair in December. Nearby, Château La Coste at Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade combines a wine estate with an outdoor gallery of art and architecture by names including Tadao Ando and Frank Gehry. It makes a very civilised afternoon.

Cross the Durance at Cadenet and you are in the Luberon. Here the villages perch on rocky spurs above cherry orchards, vines and lavender. Lacoste climbs to the ruined château once owned by the Marquis de Sade. Oppède-le-Vieux is half reclaimed by the trees, and Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt has a windmill and castle ruins above its rooftops.
Apt is the working town of the area, famous for its candied fruit and a Saturday morning market that fills the old centre. Further east, Viens is quieter still, on the road towards Haute-Provence. A villa here gives you the classic Provence of long lunches and shuttered afternoons, and Aix is around an hour away for a day in town.

The produce market on Place Richelme sets up every morning, and the bigger markets on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday spread across several squares. Bring home calissons, Aix's diamond-shaped sweets of almond paste and candied melon under white icing. Locally, rosé from the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence is what everyone drinks.
May, June and September are the sweetest months, warm without the crowds. July brings the opera festival, and the lavender on the Valensole plateau is at its best from late June. August is hot and busy, and the mistral can blow at any time of year. Our concierge can book festival seats, wine tastings and tables in town.
