Valais, in the south west of Switzerland, holds most of the country's 4,000-metre peaks, including the Matterhorn, and some of its greatest ski resorts: Zermatt, Verbier, Crans-Montana, Saas-Fee and Nendaz. The Rhône runs down the middle of the canton past vineyards that make it the largest wine region in Switzerland, so a ski holiday here comes with very good wine.

Beneath the Matterhorn
Zermatt is a car-free village beneath the Matterhorn, with skiing that crosses the border into Italy at Cervinia and glacier skiing on the Theodul for much of the year. It is reached only by train.

Verbier is the hub of the 4 Vallées, famous for its off-piste and its lively après, while Nendaz, linked into the same ski area, offers a quieter, family-friendly base.
