Sea-view villas from the breezy north at Cap Estate to the green slopes beneath the Pitons
As featured in
Saint Lucia is small, steep and very green. Rainforest covers its mountainous interior, and the Pitons, two volcanic peaks rising straight out of the sea on the south-west coast, are as good a landmark as any island in the Caribbean can offer. Britain and France fought over it for the better part of two centuries, which explains the French place names, the Kwéyòl you hear in the market and the cricket on the radio.
Our Saint Lucia collection runs to 80+ properties. Most are villas with sea views and private pools on the hills of Cap Estate and around Rodney Bay, and there are also hillside suites near Soufrière and the Pitons for couples who would rather wake up facing the view.
Here is how the island divides up, and when to come.

Sun Sanctuary Saint Lucia | 1-Bedroom Resort in Mamin1 bedroomsCap Estate, Gros Islet and Rodney Bay for beaches, restaurants and the marina, Cas-en-Bas for the wilder Atlantic shore, and Soufrière for the Pitons, the reefs and the rainforest.

Most of our villas are on the northern tip of the island, where the land is lower, the trade winds are cooler and both Caribbean and Atlantic are a short drive away. Rodney Bay has the marina, the long, calm sweep of Reduit Beach and the island's best concentration of restaurants. Cap Estate, on the hills above it, is quieter and has a golf course.
Pigeon Island, joined to the mainland by a causeway, is a national landmark with the ruins of Fort Rodney and a walk up to Admiral Rodney's old lookout. On Friday nights the fishing village of Gros Islet closes its streets for a jump-up of grilled fish, rum punch and sound systems. On the Atlantic side, Cas-en-Bas is the place for kitesurfing and riding along the sand.

The old French capital of Soufrière sits in a bay framed by Gros Piton and Petit Piton, which make up the Pitons Management Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Gros Piton can be climbed with a local guide, and it is a steep and sweaty half day that you will feel the next morning.
Nearby are the Sulphur Springs, sold to visitors as the world's only drive-in volcano, where you can wallow in the warm mud pools, and the Diamond Botanical Gardens with their waterfall. Below the cliffs at Anse Chastanet and Anse Mamin, the reef is some of the best snorkelling on the island. The cocoa estates in the hills behind town are worth an afternoon too.

Castries is a working port rather than a postcard, but its covered market, busiest on a Saturday morning, is the place for spices, cocoa sticks and hot pepper sauce. A little further south, Marigot Bay is a deep, sheltered inlet ringed by palms and full of yachts, and it makes a good stop for lunch on the water.
Inland, trails through the rainforest reserve lead to waterfalls and lookouts, and with patience and a good guide you may spot the Saint Lucia parrot, the national bird. On the Atlantic coast, Dennery's Saturday night fish fry is a more local affair than Gros Islet's, and all the better for it.

The national dish is green fig and saltfish, made with unripe bananas, and it is worth ordering at least once, along with accras, fish cakes fried until crisp, and a bowl of bouyon. Cocoa grows in the hills around Soufrière, so chocolate turns up everywhere.
December to April is the dry season and the busiest time. The Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival runs from late April into May, with concerts on Pigeon Island, and Carnival takes over in July. The hurricane season runs from June to November, when it is greener, quieter and wetter. Our concierge can arrange a private chef, boat trips down the coast to the Pitons, guided climbs and airport transfers.
