It’s a large space that still feels homely thanks to original features such as seven brick fireplaces (no chance of getting chilly), an upright piano, and jam jar lights. As you would expect for The Hamptons, there’s also some serious luxury going on – take a time-out in the deep marble bathtub or read a book on the L-shaped sofa which is more than long enough to stretch out for a nap. If you’re in charge of dinners, the well-equipped kitchen has got everything needed for rustling up a feast, which deserves to be served in the panelled dining room with its sash windows and feature fireplace. There’s a further guesthouse, with a small kitchen and living space, for some peace and quiet from the main house, or nab a sun lounger and soak up the summer heat beside the pool. Once you’re done with the day, gather around the outdoor fireplace – yes, there’s one here too – and compare notes on plans for tomorrow, which might just involve making the short drive to one of the many beaches nearby.
