Peaceful Patara View House is a four-bedroom stone-built gem in the sleepy village of Uzumlu on Turkey’s glistening Mediterranean coast. The rustic-looking villa boasts panoramic views of sandy Patara Beach, stretching across the coastline for about 12km and is surrounded by half an acre of natural grounds as well as forests lined with pine trees for a private, secluded and tranquil stay.
With wooden shutters and its tree surrounds, the family-friendly villa elegantly blends into the countryside. You’ll perhaps feel like you’re staying in a tree house rather than a holiday home. The terrace is lined with comfy cushioned sun loungers, and there are plenty of shaded grassy spots for curling up with your favourite holiday read while children play alongside you. The pool has a Jacuzzi section so you can relax with jets massaging your body while you take in the stunning rural views.
The villa is split into two equally spacious and stylish sections. On the first floor, there’s a fully-equipped kitchen, large sitting room with banquette-style seating scattered with cushions and two bedrooms – a double with an en-suite and a twin room. The kitchen leads onto a balcony with a table and chairs for enjoying dinner with the magical sunsets. On the ground floor, there are two more bedrooms – a double and a twin both with en-suite shower rooms – each with a separate entrance from outside.
With two hammocks in the garden too, alongside a shaded kiosk with a barbeque, professional table football and table tennis, there’s much to keep you occupied. For when you’d like to eat out or explore more of the beautiful surrounds, there are local restaurants, markets and wineries all within a short drive, as well as charming Uzumlu and Islamlar village centres. The lively town of Kalkan with its harbourside restaurants and eclectic mix of Greek and Turkish architecture is also 18km away.
Patara View House is in the charming village of Uzumlu near Islamlar on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. It’s 18km from lively Kalkan and has the majestic pine tree-lined Taurus Mountains as backdrop. The quiet area is dotted with charming traditional Turkish houses and green meadows with grazing sheep and is known for its wineries producing excellent wines. Due to it’s position a car is essential.
If you drive into Kalkan centre, there’s an exquisite harbour dotted with classic wooden boats and there are waterfront restaurants and a beautiful and historic old town which extends back from the sea. Wander the streets with houses draped in brightly coloured bougainvillaea flowers or dine on a roof terrace restaurant with spectacular views of the town. There are also plenty of swimming beaches in Kalkan and Turkish Baths for a relaxing end-of-the-day massage or body scrub.
To immerse yourself in the rich history of this charming part of Turkey, you can visit the Lycian Ruins at Patara where it is said democracy originates and is also believed to the the birthpalce of St Nicholas. Venturing furthering afield you can take a boat trip to the small island of Kekova where you can snorkel and explore the part sunken ruins of Dolchiste, an ancient town which was destroyed by an earthquake during the 2nd century.For outdoor adventurers, the dramatic Taurus Mountains with deeply cut valleys and canyons are an ideal place to hike. You could also join the popular Lycian Way – a long-distance footpath that takes you around the coast. The route stops at great sites, many Lycian, including a Roman Aquaduct . For even more sites and things to do, the bohemian town of Kas is a 30-40 minute drive, while the resort town of Fethiye is a one-hour drive away.
