British Classic Yacht Club Regatta: Commordores Log 1
The BCYC regatta Season is in full swing accompanied by a Gorgeous English summer.
The weekend of the longest day of the year was one marked by a new BCYC regatta in Dartmouth that went off with a wonderful flourish, in light airs, sunshine and racing organised by Royal Dart Yacht Club. This inaugural event with 22 yachts saw Rubicon carry off the Cetewayo Trophy for best placed BCYC boat.
Meanwhile in the Solent thirteen BCYC yachts took part in the RIR, in what turned out to be a long but fascinating sail.
Whooper and Clarionet were the stars of the BCYC fleet coming 4th and 6th in class and 15th and 20th overall, meanwhile Cetewayo had one of her best performances in ultra light winds and came in 4th in her class and 53rd overall. Events such as the RIR race show that the BCYC fleet has become highly completive, and under IRC has proven that its yachts can race against the most modern of machines.
Such racing can only enhance our understanding of these beautiful yachts many of which were purpose built by the great designers like Olin Stevens and Laurent Giles to be the flying machines of their day.
As Dorade proved by winning the transact our classic yachts are certainly not museum pieces!
Judging by the entry list The 2014 BCYC panerai Cowes Regatta will be the most completive event to date and with racing run by the RYS expectations are high for a week of fabulous racing, combined with Panerai style and the usual warm and convivial atmosphere of the BCYC event, as we celebrate our yachts wonderful heritage, and the common bond that brings us together.
