Luxury Caribbean Destination Guide: Where to stay in Barbados

Luxury Caribbean Destination Guide: Where to stay in Barbados
With charter flights arriving from the UK several times a day during peak season, and a summer that offers incredible value for money (there is a threat of hurricanes, although as any resident will tell you one hasn’t hit the island in several decades), Barbados lost its reputation as an exclusive destination some time ago. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean it can’t offer exclusivity once you’re there.
Taking a drive down the island’s opulent west coast is an experience in itself. Places such as Holetown, and the road that leads there north from the capital, Bridgetown, have become enclaves for the well-heeled, who can choose from abundant luxury hotels and resorts, or pick from one of many stunning villas when in the area. Some of the properties take several minutes to pass by even when in a taxi or limousine, meanwhile many of the hotels and guesthouses are discreetly hidden from view, ensuring the highest level of privacy possible for the guests.
Our favourite here is the Relais & Chateaux member, Cobbler’s Cove. Housed in a historic colonial property that defines what comes to mind when you think of Caribbean luxe, it boasts an excellent restaurant offering Bajan cuisine with a contemporary twist, a mere handful of rooms situated in sumptuous gardens, and a marvellous private beach that gives residents the opportunity to partake in a host of water sports; from speed boating to windsurfing.
A burgeoning sector in the travel world is, of course, luxury villas and private accommodation options, and arguably this is where Barbados really comes into its own. At the upper end of the market, we adore Villa Moonlight, a stunning purpose built five bed mansion in the highly sought after Sugar Hill Resort, just outside Holetown itself and within easy striking distance of the island’s famous west coast beaches. One of our favourite things about this particular address is the indoor dining room, which transforms into an al fresco terrace thanks to some cleverly designed folding screen doors. That, and the majestic swimming pool area that comes with two gazebos, one boasting a kitchenette, and both kitted out with great sound systems- ideal for hosting a great dinner party or simply having friends round.
If, on the other hand, £13,000 per week is a little out of your price range, then we’d advise checking out Villa Navas, which is a stone’s throw from the idyllic Gibbs beach and close to the charming Speightstown. Costing £2,562 and upwards per week, you’ll be treated to three meals per day by your own resident chef, a delightful deck and seating area (partially covered), and some impressive amenities. The best being the indoor plunge pool- ideal for dipping last night’s cobwebs away- closely followed by the outdoor swimming facilities, which are surrounded by gorgeous landscaped gardens. Just a few ideas to consider, there are, of course, scores more, but opt for one of these and satisfaction will be guaranteed.
