Luxury Homes: Copse Hill London
One of the more curious repercussions of the world becoming so much smaller thanks to better international transport connections, is that you almost forget what’s right here on your own doorstep. Far flung destinations, with their white sandy beaches and impossibly blue skies, so often manage to shout louder than good old Blighty. Sometimes, though, it’s important to remember that to overlook your homeland might be short sighted.
With this in mind I decided to act on this oversight by booking a week-long stay in London for a group of ten friends. We needed somewhere with great links to the city, but also offering a country house-style retreat, great amenities on site for when we weren’t out exploring the capital’s many prized assets, and, perhaps most importantly, five great bedrooms ideal for getting heads down once each day’s ration of wine had finally been exhausted. Ration of course being meant in the loosest possible sense, but let’s not go into that right now.
After some searching, Copse Hill seemed to fit the bill. A wooden-clad pile in the heart of Wimbledon, despite its location just a short Tube ride from the centre of London it’s hard to imagine anywhere feeling quite so rural. The expansive lawn, beautifully manicured gardens, secluded bedroom terraces and outdoor BBQ and dining area ensured we quickly forgot we were in any town at all, let alone the biggest in Western Europe.
Inside, as we were quick to realise, the delights continued. A stately-style dining room provided the perfect place for us to enjoy relaxed evening meals after a busy day exploring various areas of the city. The dedicated games room- complete with snooker table- ensured we were never bored after dining, keeping us entertained long into the night (and indeed beyond), and the traditional aesthetics of the reception area retained the air of grandeur, and created a feeling of cosiness during the evening. Not least as we had a resident musician who loved playing the ivories on the grand piano.
In many ways the biggest selling points were the bedrooms themselves. The Master Suite’s rattan king-sized bed is the thing life-changing sleeps are made of, with the Victorian wardrobes offering plenty of room for clothing and tying the room together. Although travelling with other couples, our single friends were impressed with the twin room offerings, which would put many a hotel to shame in terms of size and decor.
Add to this a well-proportioned kitchen, boasting a breakfast bar, along with the separate study which came in very handy for that all important game of Murder In The Dark, and clearly this was the ideal choice for our long-overdue reunion with friends, and the perfect base for our holiday in the British capital.
