Men’s Spring Fashion Tips & Style Update
We may still be in the depths of Winter, but fashion has well and truly moved on to Spring. Here’s my take on some quality essentials that will elevate your wardrobe into the here and now without looking like you’re a fashion victim.
Mens fashion lacks the huge choice and versatility available to us ladies, and options narrow even more in the warmer months when layering becomes less practical. So it pays to invest in some key quality pieces each season to keep things fresh and focus on the details….it’s all about the details.
Here’s a pick of my favourite key items that will propel you through the coming months in the utmost sartorial style.
Balenciaga Triple S Sneakershttp://bit.ly/2G65aVt
The ‘it’ shoe of the season for those in the know, Balenciaga have recently surpassed Gucci, taking the top spot as the worlds most coveted super-brand, and the demand for these shoes just keeps on growing. The nineties are a continuing fashion-inspiration at the moment and chunky, ugly trainers are the footwear of choice. To carry this look off with style, team with a pair of beige or camel chinos, (turn ups mandatory) and, keeping the rest of your outfit neutral, let your feet do the talking. A step too far for you? Prada have some options that are slightly more commercial.
BlackTie 2.OSK Round Frame Dior Homme Sunglasseshttp://bit.ly/2n2MMVq
Sunglasses are getting smaller. Remember the Pet Shop boys? Yes, we are still taking our cue from the nineties, with coloured lenses, clip on frames, round Harry Potter style and ultra thin-wrap around styles. Unless you are a twenty-something model with cut-glass cheekbones, most of these looks are pretty hard to carry off. Enter the BlackTie round frames from Dior Homme. They hit all the right notes, while being totally wearable. If you have a square or heart-shaped face these will look particularly good, adding some curves and softness.
Etro Tropical Print Short Sleeved Linen Shirthttp://bit.ly/2rxfvX9
Printed shirts are going to be everywhere this summer with Louis Vuitton leading the designer pack during SS18 Mens Fashion Week last September. Whether you opt for Hawaiian, floral or paisley, buy one with a super-flattering cuban collar for extra style points. Feeling unsure? A printed shirt is a really easy way to inject a little colour into an otherwise neutral wardrobe. Most men I have worked with tend to favour a core colour such as navy, and stick to it whenever they shop. The result? A capsule wardrobe that works but is boring and flat. Find a gorgeous print in a colour that really suits you and have fun. If you have a slimmer figure then embrace the look and wear it fully buttoned with a pair of jeans or chinos, if you are broader, layer it over a plain Tee and create a flattering vertical panel that will take lbs off.
Neil Barrett Mid Rise Straight Leg Indigo Jeanhttp://bit.ly/2DoqGmv
Skinnies are out, and its all about the straight leg – or wide if you dare. The seventies influence is so current (when has it actually not been?) so if you really want to raise your jeans game try a mid-washed wide leg with a front crease (check out Gucci) but for most a decent straight leg is a more wearable essential. I love a dark indigo denim for its versatility, add a chunky turn up and brogue boots and you are ready for any situation.
Alexander McQueen Cobalt Double Breasted Wool and Mohair blend Suit Jacket and Trousershttp://bit.ly/2DwYqSRhttp://bit.ly/2DqHXeV
The coloured suit is in! Whether you prefer millennial pink, a very wearable ice blue or eighties-inspired white, head-to-toe colour blocking is a thing, and pastels should definitely feature in your palette. Are you brave enough? It’s actually a very flattering trend no matter which colour option you pick. Just make sure you pick wisely with your frame in mind. Lean and tall types would look great in a double-breasted jacket, as it would add a bit of bulk. If you are on the bulky side yourself, choose a slimline, single button jacket without pockets to keep things looking clean, and team with some sharp, straight leg trousers. I love seeing suits worn with a plain white or graphic T shirt, but they also look sharp with a printed shirt or you can mix and match to make them work harder.
Saint Laurent Logo Print T Shirthttp://bit.ly/2G7IQdX
Every dapper chest will be sporting a logo this season. In fact, chests have lost their exclusivity and logos are to be found on pretty much everything from bags to bombers. The logo T shirt remains the coolest way to wear to this trend and I love this understated Saint Laurent version. Wear with jeans, white sneakers and an unstructured jacket for a chic spin on hipster cool.
Don’t forget your grooming!
Now you have updated your wardrobe, don’t forget to look after your skin too. This is the time of year when our skin is at its driest and most stressed out as a result of central heating, and the often extreme weather. If you don’t have a decent skincare routine, now is the time to start one.
In my next article, I will be sharing my favourite products and tips to overhaul your skin and make sure you are ready to face that sunshine when it finally arrives.
