Rampur Select Indian Single Malt Whisky Review

Rampur Whisky is a very different single malt from Radico Khaitan, India’s third largest distillery established in 1943.

Rampur is distilled in traditional copper pot stills in the oldest distillery in India, dating from 1943 with 73 years of distillation expertise. The Himalayas provide polar opposite of climate conditions throughout the year with the flavour of the famous Indian summer giving Rampur an added dimension and depth.

Rampur is a non-chill filtered single malt, distilled and matured in the foothills of the Himalayas. As Indian whisky matures significantly more quickly than other whiskies such as Scotch and Irish whiskies, Rampur benefits from a smooth, mellow taste with a long lasting finish.

Styled as “The Kohinoor of Single Malts”, this super premium malt whisky is steeped in the rich Indian heritage and enduring traditions of the Maharajas.

One caveat is this tastes like a young whisky, though there’s nothing wrong with that. There is a lingering taste of schnapps in the first sip, which would be reduced if they took a smaller and earlier section of the alcohol in the distillation process.

Master Blender, Anup Barik, was born into a family of blenders and brings decades of expertise and perfection to the blending of this fine whisky – Rampur Indian Single Malt Whisky.

This is a worthy whisky with a multitude of unusual pleasing flavours. Something to pick if you’re looking for something different.

IX Tasting Notes

Nose
Earthy, rich, sweet butterscotch, oak, spice and marzipan, fruitcake and melted butter. An exquisite nose, with different notes following on from each other.

Palate
Strong hint of schnapps, a hit of alcohol, clean, fresh spice with apple, sherry, then honey.

Finish
A pleasing finish as the flavour mellows and reveals a surprising mixture of mellow scents, from floral to sweet. A good rounded balance at the end.

It would benefit from a few extra years maturation for me, but if you like your whisky with a bit of punch, then try this very interesting and complex offering from Rampur, aged in the foothills of the Himalayas.

The most surprising aspect of this whisky is just how many different flavours it packs into one sip. An impressive melange of sweet, spicy, floral and malt.

Rampur comes in a luxurious hand crafted silk pouch with embroidery within a smart simple elegant white and gold canister, reflecting the style and heritage of India.
