The Beach At Bude Hotel Review
The beach At Bude Hotel is set high on the cliff overlooking one of the most stunning beaches in Cornwall. You reach it by driving through the rather idyllic seaside resort of Bude, past lovely little boutiques, following the rising coast road to the right side of the bay until you reach a row of 19th century coloured terraced houses. This uber trendy hotel is almost the last on the row, perched above Summerleaze beach, a magnificent vista of twisting sand dunes, grassy hillocks and long rolling waves sweeping in to shore.
The view is magnificent quite one of the best in Britain, you might almost be in the Outer Hebrides, with black rocks that tower over this raw dramatic wilderness, white horses flecking the dark green sea as it flows in between the various sand formations. This entire stretch of coast is famous for its rugged, dramatic beaches and fabulous long rolling waves, ideal for surfers and swimmers alike.
As I arrived I was greeted by Mike, the friendly manager, who helped me park the large Jeep Cherokee Night Eagle out front and then swiftly booked in by Frankie who enquired after my journey and then showed me to my Deluxe Room with sea view. The decor was light and airy with natural wood and wicker mixed with muted warm colours in a marine seaside theme. This warm welcoming boutique hotel, with its 16 rooms, even has a spacious outdoor terrace where you can dine and admire the landscape. A great place to catch the light in the morning or the sunset in the evening. It’s the ideal base from which to explore the surrounding coast or surf the numerous celebrated beaches.
After getting comfortably installed I made my way down to the zinc topped horse shoe bar on the ground floor which is very popular even in winter with a warm, chic and comfortable ambiance. They have live music on Sundays and a comprehensive bar menu if you don’t want to stop for dinner. After a cool glass of champagne I was shown to my restaurant table by the window adjacent to the terrace overlooking the beach and perused the menu. The head chef Joe Simmonds trained with Sam Moody at the Michelin starred restaurant the Priory and the menu is interesting and varied. I started with the king scallops with poached parsnip, onion bhaji, pickled ginger, coriander herb, salted caramel parsnip puree, and curry oil, which was divine, with many different combinations of individual flavours that you could mix and match each time. Then I had the pan roasted wild bass with crab & potato doughnut, confit garlic, grilled leeks, garlic & lemon yoghurt, poached leeks and coriander, shallot and spring onion dressing. The bass was light and perfectly cooked, and the crab and potato doughnut balanced the garlic and lemon yoghurt well with the shallots and spring onions. The chef is clearly passionate about conjuring up fresh new flavours, using local ingredients, which abound in this idyllic corner of Cornwall.
I indulged and finished with the salted dark chocolate & milk chocolate delice with cornflake base, cereal ice cream, vanilla marshmallow and milk curd which was as good as it sounds. I was going to be watching Reubyn Ash, the UK champion surfer, jumping waves the next day so surely that would burn a few calories. I finished the evening off with a Monkey Shoulder whisky in the bar, which was now even livelier than before, with couples and groups of friends enjoying this winter evening in laid back style.
I doubt there is a more beautiful corner of England, with such a weather beaten and awe inspiring coastline, than here in Bude and The beach at Bude Hotel commands the best location from which to visit the surrounding area, hang out in the cool bar and dine with friends in the excellent restaurant. This is the ideal spot for families, surfers, friends and travel connoisseurs seeking Britain at its very best. It is hip, friendly, fun and Summerleaze beach may well rank as one of the most beautiful in the world. Numerous films and tv series are shot here for good reason, both for the fantastic landscapes and the relaxed quality of life that make this a very special place indeed. Highly recommended, even compared to many more renowned international destinations.
