With plenty of home comforts and the beauty of the Slovenian countryside right on your doorstep, you will dream about returning to this serene rural oasis time and time again.Nestled amidst dense forests and surrounded by the Krim-Mokc Hills, the village of Rakitna lies on a large karst plateau some eight hundred metres above sea level. Here, the warm Mediterranean breeze mingles with fresh mountain air from the Julian Alps to create a truly pleasant climate that is well-known throughout Slovenia and beyond for its restorative health benefits.
Scenic Lake Rakitna is the perfect place for a refreshing dip in the water during the summer months, followed by a picnic of delicious local produce or freshly picked fruits. There is a forty-minute circular walk near the lake, which is popular with locals and visitors alike, and an archaeological trail that takes around an hour and a half. This trail leads to the remains of a third century tower and an ancient Roman wall. For those who wish to explore further afield, Rakitna also provides a base for several longer hiking and biking trails, such as a popular route leading to the nearby Krim Hill, where you can take in the marvellous sights of Ljubljana and the Alps in the distance. At the summit, visitors who have worked up an appetite will be rewarded with a delicious meal at a traditional mountain hut.
Fishing enthusiasts will enjoy visiting Lake Rakitna during the spring and the autumn, when they can purchase fishing permits online from the local club and make the most of the wonders of the lake, which features ten different species of fish. For something a little different, you may also wish to visit a friendly local stable, from which you can take in the sights of the beautiful surrounding area on horseback.
During colder months, Rakitna becomes a winter wonderland under soft blankets of snow, where you can enjoy ice skating and cross-country skiing. Winter is also a lovely time to enjoy the pretty village, home to a Baroque church at its centre, which takes on a very festive atmosphere around Christmastime.
Away from your stunning rural retreat, drive for just forty-five minutes to reach Slovenia’s fairytale capital city. Wander the cobbled streets of Ljubljana’s Old Town and stop for a coffee before soaking up the atmosphere at one of the city’s vibrant outdoor markets. Cultural highlights include the National Museum of Slovenia and the Museum of Modern Art and the impressive Ljubljana Castle with its striking position overlooking the city. The stunning beauty of glacial Lake Bled is just over an hour’s drive away from the chalet, so make your way there for a day trip to remember. Row to the magical island at the centre of the lake, before enjoying a leisurely lunch and a traditional Bled cream cake in the sunshine! At Excellence Luxury Villas we pride ourselves on going that little bit further for our guests.
