Construction of Château de Jaques began in the late 1600s on the foundations of a medieval castle dating back to 1425. Today, three medieval towers and the original castle cellars remain as enduring testaments to its rich heritage. The gardens, designed by the famed landscape architect André Le Nôtre—celebrated for his work at Versailles—offer a tranquil retreat. Over the centuries, the château has hosted notable figures, including Charles II during his exile, and bore witness to its occupation by German forces in World War II.

Unique historical touches abound: the “orange room,” favoured by the Bishop, retains its original wallpaper chosen by the Earl, while the kitchen transports visitors to a bygone era.

The sound of village church bells drifts through the gardens, and a bakery just beyond the gates tempts with the aroma of freshly baked bread and croissants. A picturesque 15-minute walk through the woods leads to a serene lake, with another close by, and the Marne River nearby invites leisurely cruises and riverside relaxation. The Local Area

The château is nestled in a charming, picturesque village with a delightful boulangerie offering fresh morning pastries and a small grocery store known for its exceptional seasonal strawberries. A pizzeria is located in the neighbouring village, just a five-minute drive away, while a larger supermarket can be reached within ten minutes. For a wider variety of shops and restaurants, the historic town of Châlons-en-Champagne is only 11km away.

A scenic 15-minute walk through the woods leads to a tranquil lake, with another lake slightly further afield. The nearby Marne River offers opportunities for river cruises and a river beach. For outdoor enthusiasts, the area is rich with walking trails, cycle paths, and horse-riding facilities.

In Châlons-en-Champagne, a delightful covered market is held three times a week (Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday), providing a wonderful opportunity to explore local produce. The town boasts an array of historical sites, beautiful gardens, and two UNESCO-listed churches. Visitors can take a boat tour along the town’s canals, admiring its impressive architecture. During July and August, the town transforms with a riverside plage featuring sunbeds, a large sandpit, pony rides, games, as well as canoeing and pedalos on the canals.

Golf enthusiasts can head to Golf de la Grande Romanie, located 30km east of Châlons.

For those seeking city adventures, the high-speed train from Châlons takes you to Paris in just 90 minutes, perfect for a memorable day in the capital. Alternatively, Disneyland Paris is 140km away and can be reached by car or train, offering a magical outing for families.

The region’s renowned Champagne heritage begins in Châlons with a visit to Joseph Perrier’s vast chalk cellars, where tastings are available. From there, embark on the Route de Champagne, winding through idyllic villages where you can sample and purchase champagne.
