Chamonix is not a ski resort in the purpose-built sense. It is a real Alpine town with a long history, set in a deep valley beneath Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe, and it has been drawing climbers, skiers and the simply awestruck since the eighteenth century. It also hosted the very first Winter Olympics, in 1924.
Our Chamonix collection runs to 90+ chalets, from wood-panelled family chalets in the woods around town to contemporary houses with floor-to-ceiling views of the Aiguilles, and farmhouses in Argentière and Les Houches. Many come with saunas and hot tubs, and the larger chalets can be catered.

Town, villages and a great deal of mountain
Chamonix itself is a lively town with a pedestrian centre, Belle Époque hotels, shops, bars and restaurants that stay open all year. Chalets in and around town put all of that within easy reach, with buses and the valley train connecting the ski areas.
Argentière, further up the valley, is quieter and more traditional, and home to the Grands Montets, known for steep, high and challenging skiing. Les Houches, at the lower end, is the family choice, with gentler wooded slopes and spectacular views back up to Mont Blanc.

For adventurous skiers, above all
Chamonix's ski areas are spread along the valley rather than linked, and they reward confident skiers. Brévent and Flégère face Mont Blanc across the valley, the Grands Montets is famous for its steep terrain and off-piste, and Balme, at the head of the valley, offers wide, sunny slopes.
The great adventure is the Vallée Blanche, a glacier descent of around twenty kilometres from the top of the Aiguille du Midi back to Chamonix, skied with a mountain guide. Our concierge can book guides for it and for any other off-piste day.

Cable cars, glaciers and an Italian lunch
The Aiguille du Midi cable car climbs to 3,842 metres for one of the great views of the Alps, and the Montenvers rack railway runs up to the Mer de Glace glacier. The Mont Blanc tunnel puts Courmayeur in Italy within easy reach, which makes a day across the border for lunch a very Chamonix thing to do.
Chamonix is just as good in summer, with hiking, climbing, paragliding and mountain biking, and many of our chalets are available all year.
