Palmeraie villas, medina riads and desert camps, from Marrakech and the Atlas to the Atlantic at Essaouira
As featured in
Few countries so close to Britain feel so far away. Under four hours from London you can be drinking mint tea in a courtyard in Marrakech, with the call to prayer drifting over the rooftops and the snow-capped Atlas on the horizon. Morocco offers souks and palaces, a stony desert at the edge of the city, Atlantic surf and some of the best cooking in Africa.
Our Morocco collection runs to 230+ properties, most of them in and around Marrakech. They range from walled villas in the palm groves of the Palmeraie and estates on the road to the mountains, to riads hidden behind plain doors in the medina, desert retreats in Agafay and houses near Essaouira, Tangier and Rabat.
What follows is a guide to where to stay, when to come and what to eat once you arrive.

Most of our Moroccan villas are in the Palmeraie, the old palm grove on the northern edge of Marrakech. The villas there sit behind high walls among gardens and olive trees, and the medina is around twenty minutes away by car. It is the choice for families and groups who want space, a large pool and quiet at night.
If you would rather be in the middle of things, take a riad in the medina, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Go out at dusk to Jemaa el-Fna, spend an hour at the Bahia Palace, and visit the Jardin Majorelle and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in the cool of the morning.

Southwest of Marrakech, the Agafay is a stony desert of bare, rolling hills. You won't find the dunes of the Sahara here, but it is far closer, under an hour from the city. Its retreats are quiet by day and spectacular by night, when the stars come out over the hills and the Atlas peaks turn pink at sunset.
To the south, the province of Al Haouz climbs into the High Atlas. The Ourika valley and the village of Imlil are popular for walks among Berber villages and walnut groves, and Jebel Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa, rises above them. Tameslouht, closer to town, is known for its potters.

Essaouira is a fortified eighteenth-century port on the Atlantic, around two and a half to three hours' drive west of Marrakech. Its whitewashed medina with blue shutters is a UNESCO site. The trade wind makes the town a favourite with kitesurfers and keeps the summers cool, and the fish grilled at stalls by the harbour is as fresh as you will find. Each June the Gnaoua festival fills the squares with music.
Further north, Tangier looks across the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain, Rabat has the Kasbah of the Udayas and a calm, elegant medina, and Fes el Bali is among the largest car-free medieval cities in the world.

Moroccan cooking rewards the curious. Try pastilla, a pigeon or chicken pie dusted with cinnamon, slow-cooked tagines, and tanjia, the Marrakech dish of beef cooked for hours in a clay urn in the embers of a hammam furnace. Mint tea comes with almost everything.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Summer in Marrakech regularly passes 40°C, though the coast stays cooler, and winter brings sunny days, cold nights and snow on the Atlas. During Ramadan, which falls about eleven days earlier each year, the evenings take on a festive mood. Our concierge can arrange a cook, guides for the souks, desert dinners and transfers.

With 230+ properties in Morocco, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.
You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.
Airport transfers, guides for the souks, a hammam visit, a private cook, desert dinners in Agafay, Atlas excursions and day trips to Essaouira. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Most visitors choose Marrakech. The Palmeraie suits families and groups who want walled gardens and private pools, and a riad in the medina suits couples who want to be close to the souks. Agafay and the Atlas foothills offer more space and silence, and Essaouira is the choice for the coast.
March to May and September to November are the most comfortable months. Summer in Marrakech is very hot, while Essaouira stays cooler thanks to the Atlantic wind. Winter days are sunny and mild, but nights can be cold.
A riad is a traditional townhouse in the medina, built around an inner courtyard or garden, with plain outer walls and rooms that face inwards. A villa is usually a larger, newer house outside the old city, often in the Palmeraie, with grounds and a bigger pool.
