Chalets in Zermatt

The Matterhorn, a car-free village and skiing into Italy

Zermatt is the Alpine resort people picture when they close their eyes: a car-free village of old larch chalets and grand hotels, electric taxis and horse-drawn carriages, and above it all the Matterhorn, the most recognisable mountain in the world. It is reached by train, which adds to the sense of arriving somewhere apart.

Our Zermatt collection runs to 50+ chalets and apartments, from traditional chalets in the old village to contemporary chalets with spas, wine cellars and views straight up to the Matterhorn, many with staff.

Here is a guide to Zermatt, its skiing and how to get there.

The Village

Car-free, timeless and beneath the Matterhorn

Cars are not allowed in Zermatt, so visitors arrive by train, from Täsch or directly from Visp and the Swiss rail network, and move around by electric taxi or on foot. The old village is a maze of dark larch barns and chalets, and the main street is lined with shops, hotels and restaurants.

Chalets close to the centre put everything within a short walk, while those higher up, around Winkelmatten and the Sunnegga side, offer peace and views of the Matterhorn from the hot tub.

The Skiing

High, long and international

Zermatt's skiing is spread across Sunnegga, Gornergrat and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, whose top station is the highest cable car station in Europe. The glacier allows skiing all year, and from the top you can ski across the border to Cervinia in Italy for lunch and back again on the same lift pass, with the international supplement.

The runs are long and high, with superb cruising for intermediates and serious off-piste and heli-skiing for experts with a guide.

Mountain restaurants worth the trip

Zermatt's mountain restaurants are among the best in the Alps, from rustic huts in tiny hamlets above the village to elegant terraces with long wine lists. In the evening, the village offers everything from fondue to fine dining.

The winter season usually runs from late November to late April, with glacier skiing beyond that. Our concierge can arrange train or helicopter transfers, luggage handling, ski hire, guides and restaurant reservations.
