Villas with pools and sea views around the gulf, from Pampelonne and Ramatuelle to the capes of La Croix-Valmer
As featured in
Saint-Tropez was a quiet harbour on the Var coast until Paul Signac sailed in during the 1890s and told his friends. Painters came first, then writers, then Brigitte Bardot and the film crews of the 1950s. These days there are superyachts moored along the quay, but the town has kept its fishing boats, its boules players and its twice-weekly market, and that mix is what makes it worth the journey.
Our Saint-Tropez collection runs to 120+ villas spread around the gulf. There are contemporary houses with infinity pools above Pampelonne, Provençal mas in the vines near Ramatuelle, sea-view villas at Beauvallon and La Croix-Valmer, and a few hillside retreats inland at La Garde-Freinet.
Below we cover where to base yourself, when to come, and which mornings are worth getting up early for.

Villa Parc Seaview St Tropez France6 bedroomsSaint-Tropez itself for the port and the Place des Lices, Ramatuelle for Pampelonne and the hilltop village, La Croix-Valmer for quieter beaches and the coast path, and Grimaud and Sainte-Maxime across the gulf.

Saint-Tropez is small enough to cross on foot in a quarter of an hour. Pastel houses line the old port, with a wall of yachts in front of them in summer. Behind the port, the lanes of La Ponche, the old fishermen's quarter, lead down to a small beach. The Musée de l'Annonciade, a former chapel on the harbour, has a fine collection of Signac, Matisse, Bonnard and the other painters who followed him here.
On Tuesday and Saturday mornings the Place des Lices fills with market stalls under the plane trees. For the rest of the week it belongs to the boules players. Walk up to the citadel for the view across the gulf and its museum of maritime history.

Strictly speaking, the beach most people mean by Saint-Tropez is not in Saint-Tropez. Pampelonne curves for around five kilometres along the coast of Ramatuelle, and its beach clubs run from the very smart to the barefoot. Tahiti beach is at the northern end.
Ramatuelle itself is a hilltop village of narrow, flowered lanes, with views over the vineyards to the sea. The actor Gérard Philipe is buried there, and the theatre festival held in his memory each August is one of the most agreeable evenings on the coast. Villas around Ramatuelle are only a short drive from both the beach and the port.

South of Pampelonne, the coast gets wilder. A coastal path follows the shoreline past Cap Camarat, Cap Taillat and Cap Lardier, which are largely protected from development, and it drops into coves such as L'Escalet. La Croix-Valmer has Gigaro, a long, family-friendly beach, and a quieter feel than Saint-Tropez.
Across the gulf, Grimaud has a ruined castle above its old village and, down on the water, Port Grimaud, a lagoon town of canals built from the 1960s. Inland, La Garde-Freinet sits among the cork oaks and chestnut woods of the Massif des Maures, cooler in high summer. Boats from Sainte-Maxime avoid the summer traffic into town.

The local pastry is the tarte tropézienne, a brioche filled with cream, first made in the 1950s. Its name, so the story goes, was suggested by Brigitte Bardot. Côtes de Provence rosé comes from the vineyards around Ramatuelle and Gassin, and many estates welcome visitors to taste.
July and August are glamorous and crowded. June and September have warm seas and an easier pace. The Bravade fills the streets with costumes and musket fire on 16 to 18 May, and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez brings classic yachts to the bay from late September into early October. Our concierge can arrange boat days, beach club tables, wine tastings and transfers.

Stay in or just outside Saint-Tropez if you want to walk to the port and the restaurants. Ramatuelle is best for Pampelonne beach and the vineyards. La Croix-Valmer is quieter, with family beaches and the coast path, and Grimaud and Beauvallon have views back across the gulf.
