Hillside villas above white-sand bays, on a small French island with a Swedish past and a very good lunch
As featured in
St Barts is small, steep and unmistakably French. It has baguettes in the morning, rosé at lunch and a capital, Gustavia, named after a Swedish king, because Sweden owned the island for almost a century before handing it back to France in 1878. There are no high-rise hotels and no cruise-ship crowds on the beaches. Instead you get a scatter of coves, each with its own character, and a hilly interior covered in villas looking out to sea.
Our St Barts collection runs to 37 villas, from houses on the hills above Gustavia and Corossol to villas looking over St Jean, Flamands and the lagoon at Grand Cul-de-Sac. The largest have up to 8 bedrooms, and the view from the terrace is usually the reason people come.
Here is a guide to the island's bays, its seasons and how to get there.

Gustavia sits around a deep horseshoe harbour, and in winter the larger yachts tie up stern to the quay. Its streets still carry Swedish names alongside the French ones, and the old Swedish bell tower and the museum in the stone Wall House tell the story of the island's Scandinavian century.
A short walk from town, past the remains of Fort Karl, brings you to Shell Beach, made almost entirely of tiny shells and a good place to watch the sun go down. Just west, the fishing village of Corossol keeps up its tradition of weaving hats and baskets from palm fronds.

St Jean is the sociable one, with beach restaurants, boutiques and the small aircraft that skim the hill and land at the end of the sand. Flamands, on the north coast, is long, wide and calmer in mood. To the south, Saline and Gouverneur have no buildings behind them at all, just dunes, scrub and clear water, so take a picnic and plenty of shade.
Colombier, in the far north west, can only be reached by boat or on foot, along a cliff path from the end of the road at Flamands. Our concierge can arrange a day boat to get you there in style.

Lorient is among the oldest settlements on the island, with a small beach popular with local families and surfers. Further east, the lagoon at Grand Cul-de-Sac is shallow and protected by a reef, which makes it a favourite for children, paddleboarding and kitesurfing. Petit Cul-de-Sac and the rugged Toiny coast beyond feel properly remote, with Atlantic swell breaking against dark rock.
Villas on this side tend to be quieter, and Gustavia is still only a short drive away along the island's winding hill roads.

The cooking on St Barts is French with a Creole accent: grilled fish, accras of salt cod, excellent bakeries and long lunches with your feet in the sand. The Saint Barth Gourmet Festival brings visiting chefs to the island each November.
The dry season, from December to April, is the high season, and Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of all, so book well ahead. Sailors will want to know about the St Barths Bucket in March and Les Voiles de St Barth in April. Our concierge can arrange transfers from St Maarten, car hire, day boats and restaurant tables.
