Villas above Georgian harbours and calm west coast bays, with Barbuda's pink sand a ferry ride away
As featured in
Antiguans like to say their island has 365 beaches, one for every day of the year, and nobody has ever been keen to check. What is not in doubt is the sailing. The trade winds blow steadily, English Harbour has sheltered ships since Nelson's day, and each April the island fills with yachts for its classic regatta and Sailing Week.
Our collection here runs to 50+ properties, most of them villas with private pools. Many sit on the hills above English Harbour and Falmouth, and there are more on the west coast around Urlings and Jolly Harbour. There are also harbourside apartments and suites in a great house, and the largest villas have up to 8 bedrooms.
Below is a guide to the harbours, the beaches, Barbuda and the best months to come.

Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour is a Georgian naval base that still works. Horatio Nelson was stationed here in the 1780s, and the dockyard and its related sites became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. Its old stone buildings now hold restaurants, a museum and chandleries, and next door Falmouth Harbour is one of the great superyacht anchorages of the Caribbean.
Above both harbours, the old military lookout at Shirley Heights draws a crowd on Sunday evenings for steel bands, rum punch and a famous view of the sunset. Villas on these hillsides look straight down over the masts.

The Caribbean side of the island is sheltered and calm. Jolly Harbour has a marina, a golf course and long beaches close by. Further south, the road runs past Ffryes and Darkwood beaches to the villages of Urlings and Old Road, where it is quieter and the sunsets are excellent.
Offshore, Cades Reef is good for snorkelling. Inland from Old Road, Fig Tree Drive climbs through the island's last rainforest, close to Mount Obama, Antigua's highest point at around 400 metres. It makes a good morning out before a long lunch on the beach.

St John's is a lively little capital with a busy market and the white towers of its cathedral. On the Atlantic coast, Devil's Bridge is a natural limestone arch pounded by the surf, Half Moon Bay is a long curve of pale sand, and the old sugar plantation at Betty's Hope shows the island's harder history.
Barbuda lies around 90 minutes away by ferry from St John's. It is low, flat and largely undeveloped, with miles of pink-tinged sand. Codrington Lagoon is home to one of the largest frigate bird colonies in the world, and local boatmen take visitors out among the nests.

The national dish is pepperpot, a rich vegetable and meat stew served with fungee, a cornmeal dumpling not unlike polenta. The Antigua black pineapple is small, very sweet and well worth asking for, and grilled lobster turns up on beach-shack menus all over the island.
The best weather runs from December to April, when it is dry and the trade winds keep things fresh. The yachts arrive in April for the Classic Yacht Regatta and then Sailing Week. Carnival fills late July and early August. Hurricane season officially runs from June to November. Our concierge can arrange boat charters, Barbuda day trips, restaurant tables in English Harbour and transfers from the airport.
