Chateau Des Remparts France
Holiday Home Rental Description
Close to three of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, stay in style at this impressive French château set amongst glorious parkland and castle ruins in the captivating region of Gers.
This late 16th-century château has been gracefully restored by its current owners who rescued this beautiful abode following its abandonment for many years. Its transformation has been remarkable – step through the sun-dappled courtyard into the light-filled hallway with stone flag flooring and a Venetian chandelier and you will be immediately amazed. The living spaces are elegant yet welcoming whilst the kitchen-diner is the social hub of the house with a perfect blend of classic and contemporary furnishings.
Upstairs, the four bedrooms are so pretty with delicately designed décor and the loveliest of bathrooms, two with romantic rolltop baths and the master bedroom’s bathroom with its huge tub and vintage-style sinks.
Wherever you are in this house, there is a sense of light and beauty with wonderful pieces of artwork, sculptures and good-looking furnishings. French windows from the living room open up to the grand balcony terrace with picturesque views as you relax with a glass of local wine or follow the grand steps down to the château’s swimming pool. In the upper landscaped garden, admire the castle ruins in this incredible setting.
The château can be rented by itself or for larger groups of up to 22 guests, follow the driveway and reach two gorgeous cottages which have their own gated swimming pool set in the estate’s parkland. Decorated and furnished lovingly and with impeccable taste, there’s a 4-bedroom and 3-bedroom cottage, each with their own living and dining spaces, lovely bedrooms and al-fresco terraces. A perfect option for accompanying family or friends whether it’s a holiday with loved ones or a picture-perfect French wedding.
You will soon adapt to the slow pace of life that the Gers is so well known for as you visit fortified villages, market towns, endless vineyards or simply walk and cycle through the rolling landscapes. The trio of ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, Montréal, Fourcès and Larressingle, are all minutes away whilst the gastronomic delights of this region, famed for its foie gras, can be discovered at markets such as Condom, Lectoure and Fleurance.
Canoe or boat along the River Baise, visit Grand Armagnac vineyards, take a hot air balloon ride over summer fields of sunflowers or simply sit back and relax in the magnificent surroundings of your historic and beautiful château in Gascony. Surrounded by dreamy landscapes of the Gers, Château Des Remparts is set on a vast estate featuring beautiful parkland and castle ruins, just a short drive to Montréal-du-Gers, Fourcés and Larressingle, three of France’s classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages’.
This alluring part of south-western France is known for its slow pace of life, glorious scenery and its authentic yet excellent food and wine. Discover Gascony’s gastronomic delights by visiting local restaurants and atmospheric markets, including night markets in local villages in the height of the summer. Sample the region’s famous foie-gras and magret as well as an abundance of seasonal fruit and vegetables and delicious cheeses. This is also the land of Grand Armagnac and you will have the opportunity to visit some of Gascony’s best vineyards nearby.
The Gers’ famous trio of ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ are within easy reach – Montréal (5km), Fourcès (5km) and Larressingle (7km). The bastide town of Montréal has a couple of charming restaurants in its 13th century central square and hosts wonderful medieval night markets in the summer.
Fourcés is a characterful warren of medieval lanes leading to the historic main square with its flower market in late April whilst Larressingle is home to an impressive Gascon castle. Take a walk around Larressingle’s fortified walls and admire the rolling landscapes of vineyards and countryside. There are some fantastic walking trails around the villages, after all Larressingle and Montréal are on the Santiago de Compostella pilgrimage route.
The historic town of Condom (12km) is home to a magnificent cathedral as well as a Wednesday morning market and some excellent restaurants. Take boat trips along the Baise river, hire a little motorboat in the summer or if you prefer canoeing and kayaking then head slightly further south to Beaucaire (23km).
Éauze (20km) is worthy of a visit on a Thursday morning to experience its market day and there is also an 18-hole golf course just outside the town. Other well-known and historic market towns in this region include Lectoure (35km) and Fleurance (43km) whilst enchanting Auch (55km), the historic capital of Gascony, is around an hour away.
Horse-riding, cycling and even hot-air ballooning are other ways to explore the undulating scenery of the Gers. Then there is summer swimming at Castéra-Verduzan and the thermal spas around Barbotan-les-Thermes or a tree-top adventure courses near Aignan for the most adventurous of guests.
