The approach to the villa from the coast takes you up a hillside by way of a winding country road, passing olive trees and farmhouses. From the moment you arrive through the villa gates, you will start to unwind as you take in the tranquil setting. The focus here is on summer essentials – a stunning infinity pool for a refreshing dip and wide terraces furnished for the simple pleasure of relaxing and dining while admiring the changing colours of the sea below.
Built in local stone and restored for modern living, the unfussy interiors are ideal for a large group of friends or family. Using only quality materials and carefully chosen furnishings, the villa has an authentic style which adds to the experience of staying here, with its hand-crafted Sicilian marble floors, exposed stone walls and solid wood dining table.
The bedroom set up is flexible to accommodate large family groups with enough doubles and single beds for a group of 12. The owner of Villa Tropea believes the beautiful location is one which inspires poets and writers, so he has dedicated each of the five bedrooms to his favourite Sicilian writers, carving their names in stone by the doors. Be sure to read an “Inspector Montalbano” novel there while staying in the bedroom dedicated to the author.
Dining under the wooden pergola on the terrace with the sea sparkling in the distance is an experience to remember, from feasting on fresh pastries for breakfast to an evening Aperol or barbecue together. Enjoy a private dip in your infinity pool or head down to the coast for a refreshing swim in the sea – the choice is yours.Villa Tropea enjoys breath-taking views of the area, so it is an excellent place to get your bearings and plan where to explore during your stay. The view stretches from an impressive mountainous backdrop to the tower of Scopello on the coast, from the Zingaro nature reserve to the Gulf of Castellammare. On a clear day, you can see the tip of the city of Palermo.
The village and the picturesque cliffs of Scopello on the coast are a short drive away. Well worth visiting is the 18th century cobbled ‘baglio’ where you can stop for a bite to eat and the ancient tonnara – a restored 13th-century tuna fishery, featured as a film set in recent years including Ocean’s 12 and the television series, Inspector Montalbano.
Local shops for supplies are within a short drive of the villa too, so easy to stock up for barbecues and breakfasts. A short distance in the other direction from Scopello is Castellammare del Golfo, a charming coastal town with a harbour and ancient castle on the sea, wonderful beaches, gelato and excellent seafood restaurants.
A trading port dating back to the 6th century, you can get a sense of its historical routes as you swim in the inviting waters below the castle or visit the museum. For lidos set up with sun loungers, watersports and cafes, try the beaches of Cala Petrolo and La Plaja.
Further along the coast is the Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve, a 7km stretch of untouched coastline with beautiful coves and nature trails to discover and a delightful contrast from the more popular lidos of Castellammare del Golfo.
Within an hours drive of the villa is an array of fascinating places to discover from the historical centres of Trapani and Marsala to the salt pans with their ancient windmills, the temples of Segesta and Selinunte. From Trapani, you can take a boat to the Egadi islands just off the west coast for a fascinating day out.
