Situated on a glorious, mammoth countryside estate in the stunning Catalonian Hills, just north of Girona and Barcelona, Villa Vilademuls offers superbly characterful accommodation to large groups of family or friends. The villa is nestled in the small friendly town of Vilademuls in the very heart of the Catalan region, within easy reach of the stunning Costa Brava beaches, Barcelona, Girona, the Dali Museum in Figueres and some heavenly villages and towns just north of the border with France. Guests enjoy beach days, cultural days, days in the Pyrenees, cooking courses, wine tastings, skiing and so much more. The location of Villa Vilademuls is very unique in that it offers so many easily available diverse pleasures. Vilademuls is a very attractive village, part of the Pla De L’Estany, a shifting landscape amid the Emporda plain and the gorges of La Garratoxa. Its location at the top of a hill is sensational, offering superb panorama. Girona is Northern Catalonia’s largest city, boasting a fascinating history and a fabulous jewellery box of galleries, museums, Gothic churches and a wonderful dining scene, all sprinkled along a web of cobbled lanes and medieval walls. The Riu Onyar separates the walkable historic centre from the gleaming commercial centre on the west. Barcelona is an hour’s drive away or you can take a 38 minute train from Girona. Barcelona boasts fabled architectural treasures spanning more than 2000 years, a mastery of gastronomy, a famous football team, superb family entertainment, an incredible nightlife and an enchanting seaside. You cannot really stay at Villa Vilademuls and not spend a day in Barcelona!
This magical villa dates back to 1806 and whilst it offers wonderfully maintained modern amenities, it charms with its ancient character, featuring stone arches, beamed ceilings and many other atmospheric nods from the past. Villa Vilademuls enjoys an incredibly inviting, warm ambience, partly due to its age, partly due to its warming terracotta decor and rich, lavish furnishings, partly due to the colourful bougainvillea which is so much a part of its exterior, partly to its excellent management team who are dedicated to ensuring that you experience the holiday of your dreams and partly due to all the other special touches that it offers. This traditional two hundred year old farmhouse enjoys a red-tiled roof, an ancient well and beautiful stone walls. The villa boasts six bedroom suites, all stunning, spacious and characterful and all with beautiful ensuite bathrooms and air conditioning. In total the villa can sleep up to fifteen guests. Villa Vilademuls also enjoys an excellent sociable kitchen, fantastic outside space and fabulous living space with plenty of idyllic corners where you can disappear with your holiday books and a glass of your favourite tipple. The villa has been tastefully renovated and features colour washed walls throughout, terracotta tiled floors, hand-hewn exposed beams and high vaulted ceilings. Its furnishings are sumptuous, stylish and superbly comfortable.
A large, elegant entrance hall leads you to the living areas and one ground floor bedroom suite. The villa’s kitchen will enchant the chefs in your group with its plentiful, excellent appliances, large island bench and gorgeous homely ambience. The dining area is lovely plus there is a sitting area with a squishy sofa and rocking chairs in front of an open fireplace, a real hub of the farmhouse. The kitchen offers two large fridges, a large gas range, a dishwasher and plenty more. Guests can easily keep the chefs company in this wonderfully sociable space. There is also a separate laundry room. The living room is another wonder complete with comfy sofas, satellite television and DVD player, a table and chairs for fun family board or card games, a pool table and a large library. The office offers a computer, printer, fax and office supplies should you need to catch up with some work. It also offers two single beds that can be used for additional guests or for lazing around. The ground floor bedroom oozes characterful appeal and boasts a queen size bed, two large closets, a table and chairs and a generous ensuite bathroom with a bath.
Upstairs, you will discover a striking hallway with beautiful beams and antique furniture. There are five additional bedrooms including a stunning master suite. This boasts a beautiful kingsize bed, a two-seater sofa, walk-in closets, a dresser and a large bathroom with a bath and his and hers sinks. The next bedroom enjoys a beautifully dressed queen size bed and a small ensuite shower room. Another room with a queen bed offers an antique bread oven as decoration. Guests staying in this room have use of a private bathroom with a bath next door to the bedroom. There are two twin bedrooms, both enjoying zip and link beds to offer flexible sleeping arrangements should you want them set up as kingsize beds. One boasts an ensuite shower room and the other has use of a bathroom next door which can be made private by drawing a thick curtain in the hallway. This bedroom also has an extra single bed in it too should you want to use the room as a triple. The room is the furthest away from all the other rooms. Each of the bedrooms enjoy an inviting ambience with cheerful, cosy colour schemes.
Although the interiors of Villa Vilademuls are absolutely wonderful, the gardens, terraces and the facilities outside are incredibly enticing. The swimming pool is large at 10m x 5m and is surrounded by a large terrace furnished with loungers and other outdoor furniture. The views of the Pyrenees Mountains are absolutely breathtaking. Guests can enjoy dining alfresco in a beautiful spot using the barbecue. There are many activities to be enjoyed including table tennis, badminton, petanque, basketball and football in the soccer field with goalie nets provided. You will not really want to leave this beautiful place though there are is so much on offer to discover. To make your stay even more wonderful, the superb management team can arrange private chefs to prepare an arrival supper or other meals or to offer cooking classes, private wine tastings can be arranged at the villa or at local vineyards, golf can be arranged, bike and boat rental can be arranged, you can visit a local goat cheese manufacturing facility and sample some of the delicious cheese or you could even take a hot air balloon flight for a bird’s eye view of this sensational area. The fabulous Villa Vilademuls enjoys a fabulous hillside location in Vilademuls in the Catalan countryside. There are many wonderful attractions nearby and amazing scenery all around. The villa is not far from a number of famous vineyards including Peralada, Priorat and Penedes where guests can taste and buy delicious wines. Peralada is 20 minutes away with its museum, winery, vineyards and cellar. Some of the vineyards are in the Emporda region roughly 30 to 40 minutes away, Penedes is an hour and a half away and Priorat is about an hour more. At the French vineyards, you can taste reds, whites, Muscats and enjoy delicious French cheeses with them. Within easy reach there are Roman, Greek and Phoenician ruins, ancient medieval towns, gorgeous colourful village markets, Michelin star restaurants and superb sandy beaches. You will arrive at the villa in no time at all from Girona airport, just 25 minutes away.
The sun-drenched beaches of Empuries, Sant Marti d’Empuries, L’Escala and Sant Pere Pescador are all within 20 to 30 minutes from the villa. Empuries enjoys wonderful views of Roman ruins and Sant Pere Pescador is fantastic for windsurfing.
Golf fans are spoilt for choice with many excellent courses nearby including Golf Mas Pages, 5 minutes away, Peralada Golf Club and Torre Mirona Golf Club 25 minutes away, Emporda Golf Club 40 minutes away, Golf Serres de Pals 45 minutes away and Club Golf Costa Brava and Club Platja de Pals 50 minutes away.
The lists of amazing Catalan towns and attractions are endless. The enchanting seaside city of Barcelona is a definite must. It offers boundless culture, fabled architecture, a delightful beach, a buzzy marina and a world-class drinking and dining scene. With towering temple columns, soaring 14th century cathedrals, sculptural masterpieces of Modernisme, fairytale creations by Gaudi, wide pedestrian lanes and tranquil plazas, Barcelona has it all. The city has long inspired the likes of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro, both with fabulous museums devoted to their works. Looming over the city are the rolling Collserola hills and the hilltop Montjuic which offer endless exploring and botanic and sculpture gardens, a castle and some of the major museums. You will enjoy a feast in Barcelona with incredible seafood, cured ham and fabulous delicacies, all served in the city’s captivating settings. It might be a 1920’s elegant art nouveau dining room, a classic Basque-styled tapas bar, a Galician seafood tavern or waterside, watching the sunset. Las Rambla enjoys a wonderful market where you can taste delicious food and wines and alfresco dining. Hidden away, there are charming small tapas bars serving local cured Iberico ham, gazpacho soup and la bomba, a potato croquette served with spicy tomato sauce and a healthy portion of aioli. Many bars serve the famous local Estrella as well as delicious sangria and cocktails. Live music is in abundance with jazz spilling out of basements and the rhythms of flamenco enthralling the crowds. The nightclubs are renowned. Barcelona is a city that never sleeps!
Girona is 20 minutes away from the villa, a city full of history, gastronomy, shopping and culture. The Jewish Museum and Quarter are incredible within the city’s narrow streets. The cathedral is another must see wonder with its rare 11th century Tapestry of the Creation and a superb Romanesque Cloister with biblical scenes. The Museum of History tells the history of Girona from prehistoric times to the 20th century. Another fabulous museum is the Dali Museum in Figueres.
You may also want to visit Lloret de Mar, one of Spain’s busiest holiday resorts. As well as a vibrant nightlife, theme parks and much entertainment, it offers wonderful landscapes and plenty of delightful walks along the coast or through the forest. The narrow winding streets of the Old Town are very enjoyable, brimming with shops, bars and restaurants, as are the famous landscaped Santa Clotilde Gardens, filled with fountains, ponds and beautiful sculptures. Boasting an attractive historic centre and beautiful, fascinating buildings, visitors can explore and learn about the history of the town. The Church of Sant Roma is fabulous. The front of the church is in Gothic style built between 1509 and 1522 but inside you will see the art of the Catalan modernism movement. Located on the top of the cliff between Cala Boadella and Fenals Beach, Santa Clotilde Gardens are one of Lloret de Mar’s best kept treasures. Construction on the gardens began in 1917 when the Marquis Roviralta met Clotilde Rocamora but sadly she died before they were complete. He later married his second wife and work resumed though the gardens carry Clotilde’s name. There are some wonderful festivals and events in the gardens including the Clon Festival concert series and the Lloret Outdoor Summer Festival. Throughout Lloret de Mar, visitors enjoy many other festivals and fairs including the Fair of the Americans, Fenals de Musica at Fenals Beach, the Medieval Fair and the annual Carnival. The town comes alive in a thousand colours with parades, costumes, parties and music during the Lloret Carnival. Those that love the outdoors can take to many of the footpaths that trace their way along the coastline or wind their way into the forests. Two sections of the CR92 Mediterranean Trail pass through the town.
Other wonderful towns are Besalu, once home to an important Jewish community and boasting a spectacular medieval bridge, the quaint medieval towns of Pals and Peratallada, Sant Pere de Rodes with its restored Benedictine 11th century monastery and Portbou. Over the border in France, you can reach Ceret in 30 minutes visiting its Museum of Modern Art, Collioure in 45 minutes to visit the castle and museums and Perpignan to visit the Palace of the Kings of Mallorca. Catalonia’s Pyranees are an all-season playground offering raw natural beauty, fantastic skiing and snowboarding, incredible hiking paths to the jewel-like lakes and valleys of the Parc Nacional d’Aiguestortes i Estancy de Sant Maurici, the low-lying countryside of Cerdanya and the dramatic climbing terrain of the Serra del Cadi. With majestic scenery, plunging valleys, snow-dusted peaks, thousand-year-old monasteries, outstanding Romanesque architecture and fabulous gastronomy, hikes within the Catalan Pyranees uncover so many delights.
Banyoles Lake is where the 1992 Olympic rowing races took place. It is an excellent location for picnics. The neighbouring town of La Bisbal is the centre of Catalonia’s ceramics industry so a good place to pick up a few souvenirs. It is also home to the Palace Castle of the Bishops of Girona.
