Sotogrande was established in 1962 by the American entrepreneur Joseph McMicking. He bought five farms on both sides of the Guadiaro River where it flows into the Mediterranean with the dream of turning it into one of Europe’s leading luxury leisure and residential destinations. Today it boasts many exclusive properties covering a huge area bordered by the villages of Torreguadiaro and Guadiaro to the north.
Sotogrande boasts no less that five world-class golf courses, the Almenara Golf Club, La Canada Golf Club, La Reserva Golf Club, Real Club Sotogrande and Real Club Valderrama. It also offers a golf academy so this is certainly a brilliant destination for golf fans. Real Club Valderrama shot to international fame when the 32nd Ryder Cup was played there, leading to this part of the coast being temporarity renamed the Costa del Golf! The challenging course was designed by Robert Trent Jones. Though it is an exclusive members club there are occasional opportunities for visitors to play. Robert Trent Jones also designed the fabulous Real Club de Golf Sotogrande which opened in 1964. Just 150 metres from the sea and with more than one hundred bunkers, the course is fantastic. Almenara Golf is set up on the mountainside and comprised of three nine-hole courses. Almenara’s well regarded golf academy offers PGA professional expert tuition. La Canada Golf offers stunning views of the Guadiaro River and the Mediterranean from its elevated position. La Reserva Golf is the newest of the courses and is part of the La Reserva Country Club.
The Santa Maria Polo Club is one of the most prestigious destinations for polo in Europe. Its setting on the banks of the Guadiaro River is sensational. Polo was brought to Sotogrande in 1965. The club’s summer season is now firmly placed on the jet-set social calendar. It boasts nine fields in Los Pinos, Rio Sotogrande and Puente de Hierro, along with first class stabling.
Sotogrande is known as ‘the little Venice of the Mediterranean’ for its attractive tree-lined canals and bridges. There are hundreds of berths in the stunning marina together with excellent restaurants, cafes, shops, professional services and watersports facilities. Sotogrande plays host to many serious sailing events including the Brivon Movistar Cup and the J80 World Championships. Watersports offered include wakeboarding, kitesurfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, diving and snorkeling. There are boat trips to enjoy killer whales and bottlenose dolphins.
There are amazing beaches within easy reach of the villa including Playa El Cabrero to the east of Sotogrande. It is a gorgeous crescent-shaped beach surrounded by dunes. Playa Torreguadiaro was originally an old fisherman’s haunt and now enjoys a number of buzzy cafes and bars. The main Playa Sotogrande is roughly two kilometres long to the west of the Guadiaro River. You can visit one of Sotogrande’s hip beach clubs with Dj’s, wellness treatments and considerable indulgence. These include Chambao, Trocadero, Gigi Beach and El Octogono.
It is quick and easy to visit the fantastic Costa del Sol resorts. For Mediterranean glamour, Marbella holds its own with the French Riviera and other hot-spot destinations in Europe. It is little wonder that Marbella remains as popular as it does with the rich and famous. Michelin-starred restaurants, manicured, challenging golf courses, marinas bustling with high-end yachts, chic, designer boutiques, glitzy entertainment and never-ending golden sandy beaches are all in abundance. The Arabic characteristics of Plaza de los Naranjos, the old part of Marbella are endearing together with balconies adorned with beautiful, vibrant flowers. The square’s restaurants place their tables in a small formal garden bordered by orange trees. You will find a labyrinth of narrow pedestrian streets laid with red tiles and crazy paving and beautiful plazas full of trendy, upmarket bars and restaurants and unique shops offering souvenirs, olive oil, local pottery and lace. The buildings are all whitewashed, wrapped in bougainvillea and topped with terracotta roofs, many dating back to the renaissance. Alameda Park is just a few steps south of the Old Town and feels like a private garden. There are marble walkways, fountains and benches, all under a thick canopy of tropical foliage. Many of the benches are clad with azuleos, classic Andalusian hand-printed tiles. The handsome walkway, Avenida del Mar, leads from the park to Playa de la Venus, next to Marbella’s first class marina. It enjoys palm trees and bronze sculptures designed by Salvador Dali. The central Plaza de la Iglesia is very beautiful and often hosts bustling markets and concerts. Besides the typical Andalusian cultural events, there are annual festivals dedicated to music including the Marbella International Opera Festival held in August, the Marbella Reggae Festival in July plus the Marbella International Film Festival is held in June.
A few kilometres east of old Marbella is the swanky and trendy Puerto Banus. Boutiques, super yachts and luxury sports cars meet your gaze everywhere in this fast-set resort. There is another Salvador Dali sculpture, the large Rhinoceros which weighs 3.6 tonnes. Puerto Banus was designed and built in 1970 by local property developer Jose Banus.
