Also known as the town of sea captains due to the Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of Angels. In the 15th century, sailors would return from the sea and sound their sirens when returning. The monastery would be one of the first sights they would see of home and would sound their sirens when seeing the building as a sign of gratitude. To this day the monastery sits on a hill outside of the town and still houses the icon Our Lady of Angels, which was claimed to protect sea captains.
The town lies at the foot of the neighbouring mountain Sveti Ilija which stands at 961m and is one of the best hikes along the Dalmatian coast. From the top, you will see the coastline and sea spread out before you and you may even glimpse wild horses on your journey.
Short boat ride to the neighbouring island Korcula is. The port town Korcula is sometimes known as the ‘mini Dubrovnik’ due to the similarities of its old town’s architecture to that of Dubrovnik. Korcula town is very well preserved, the layout and structure of the old town stem from the second half of the thirteenth century. The old town fortress is laid out in the shape of a fishbone, designed to protect against the strong sea winds. An impressive ‘land gate’ is a southern entrance to the old town while a second, smaller entrance lies to the west. The town has many squares and narrow streets to explore with terracotta rooftops overhead. St Mark’s Cathedral was built in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and rises tall above the rooftops. Its original charm is intact with high curved archways and detailed stonework visible.
Take to the waters with many adventures to be found. A boat can be rented from the villa where you can explore the coast and swim in the clear waters. Go even further and try snorkelling to get a closer look at what lies beneath the waves. Sunset kayaking tours are a beautiful way to see the island and will be an unforgettable afternoon. At
