Some rooms have views of the soaring trees outside, through large windows that provide lots of natural light. One room has a small desk – perfect for writing some holiday postcards. Three of the bedrooms have their own bathrooms with a bathtub or shower. The bedrooms are carefully designed to facilitate an excellent night’s sleep after a busy day sightseeing and exploring the Istrian coast. This villa is located in Poreč, a charming area full of things to see and do and also home to gorgeous beaches. All are less than two miles from the property. Nearby, Poreč has a captivating main square within the Old Town, with charming cobblestone streets, Roman walls and colourful cafes. It’s a great spot for people watching and strolling down to the harbour, where you can take a boat trip to spot dolphins at sunset.
Istria has a strong Italian influence, being just two hours from Venice and a Roman history. It’s easy to hop across the border and spend a day exploring Italy during your holiday. The Istrian heart-shaped coastline is absolutely stunning and a little less touristy than other areas in Croatia.
There’s no shortage of beaches in the area – Borik beach is just 800m away, with a pebbly shoreline and glittering waters. You can play beach volleyball and miniature golf, or just go for a relaxing swim in the sea. Borik beach has a great view of the Old Town and it is accessible for wheelchair users. For a more natural beach, blue-flag Oliva beach is perfect. The beach is on the island of St. Nikola and accessed by a five-minute boat ride. Oliva has a forest of oak and pine trees, a pebbly coast and feels unspoilt.
The food of Istria is a reason to visit in itself, as the region is famous for its delicious gastronomy and fresh ingredients. A local favourite is pljukanci, a hand-rolled pasta dish served with all manner of sauces. In the winter, the aroma of hot roasted chestnuts wafts around the centre. Istria is also famous for its wine – you can take a tour of a winery or vineyard and enjoy a glass of Refošk or Malvazija. Admire the views of rolling hills and rows of grapes.
The Euphrasian Basilica is one of the most important sights in the Istrian area. It is a World Heritage Site and dates back to the 6th-century. The basilica was inspired by Byzantine art and features breathtaking blue and gold mosaics, carved arches and geometric marble designs. Climb up the bell tower to get an outstanding view of Poreč. Zuccato Gallery is the place to check out some vibrant art in a Gothic palace. There’s an array of temporary exhibitions to explore.
Anyone visiting Istria should take a day trip to Brijuni National Park, an archipelago of 14 small islands that can be reached by boat from Pula. The islands are famous for their natural beauty and indigenous flora and fauna. Enjoy a scenic boat ride with views of the southwestern peninsula before you reach. There are dinosaur footprints in four areas on the largest island, Viliki Brijuni, and many other archaeological wonders.
