There’s plenty to enjoy around the beautiful island of Brač – you could try a spot of surfing at its famed Zlatni Rat beach, around 30 minutes down the coast, or climb its highest peak, Vidova Gora. Sumartin itself is a pretty little village with a handful of restaurants and cafés. It also offers a ferry connection to Makarska on the mainland – a great day trip. One of the largest islands in the Adriatic, Brač is a Croatian highlight not to miss. Accessible via a direct ferry connection from Split or Makarska, this beautiful island is famed for producing the white stone used to construct that city’s best-known landmark, Diocletian’s Palace.
A superb place to enjoy the great outdoors, Brač’s beaches, vineyards and mountains offer lots of diverse landscapes. You’ll find the best views on the island at Vidova Gora, north of Bol on Brač’s southern coast. This is the highest peak on all the Adriatic islands, at a towering 778m, and offers a wonderful overview of the area, with views out to the neighbouring isle of Hvar.
One of Croatia’s most popular destinations, Bol, lies on the southern coast of the island. Its popularity ensures lots of good restaurants and amenities, although prices tend to be higher than elsewhere on the island. The biggest draw in the area is the famously beautiful Zlatni Rat beach, which is notable for the way it extends into the Adriatic Sea. A pretty promenade takes you from the centre of Bol to this idyllic spot.
The largest town on Brač is Supetar on the northern coast. The attractive harbour and Old Town area are well worth a visit, and the town has yet more lovely beaches too. Supetar’s cultural hub is the National Library which includes the Ivan Rendić Gallery. Rendić was born in the area and this gallery features several of his sculptures and sketches. This is also the place to look out for other cultural events in Supetar.
Brač is a fine place to eat, and locals are proud of its specialties. Seafood and lamb from Brač, as well as its wine, are worth seeking out. The island also has its own cake, hrapoćuša, which is quite a feast in itself, layering almond sponge with walnut meringue.
The island is easily accessible from the mainland and other islands. Excursions you could take include a boat trip to neighbouring Šolta, Visit Maslinica for beautiful pine woods and secluded beaches. Back in Split there is plenty to keep you busy. As well as the huge Diocletian’s Palace complex, which houses several other notable attractions, streets and squares within its walls, check out the Riva waterfront and verdant Marjan Forest Park. Cultural gems such as the Meštrović Gallery and the Split Gallery of Fine Arts are good for a break from the sun.At
