A 17th-century palazzo in the heart of Hvar Town, the wonderful Villa Pelso accommodates up to 14 people in grand style. Fully renovated with touches of old school opulence, this impressive 5-bedroom property comes with an outdoor hot tub which enjoys the finest views of the island’s capital.
A lovely terrace area with dining table and lounge space allows you to enjoy the stunning views of this special town. A large barbecue and sun loungers, as well as the hot tub, can be found on the terrace, which looks out over old buildings to green hills beyond.
Step inside and the house will immediately impress. The living room retains a large fireplace and the original oak beams above your head, while custom-made cabinets and Venetian Murano glass chandeliers add something extra-special. The kitchen and bar area connect to the living room, and you have a comfortable lounge area with TV and an eye-catching circular dining table which can seat 12.
On the same floor is the first bedroom which has a king-size bed, en suite and direct access to the courtyard through large glass doors. Upstairs, you have the stunning master bedroom which has a large terrace looking out on Hvar’s main square and Fortica. This beautifully dressed room features a king-size bed, en suite and an original fireplace.
Another king room with en suite overlooks the town from this floor, while a twin room is found on the second floor. This smaller room is also en suite and looks out on the town. Finally, you have the larger fifth bedroom which includes four beds and an en suite bathroom.
Full of antiques and works of art, the splendour of Villa Pelso will make it a highlight of your stay on Hvar. The eponymous main town is the place to experience the island’s best nightlife and dining, as well as regular cultural events. Idyllic beaches await you just down the coast, with Pokonji Dol and Mekićevica within a 12-minute drive and the delightful Pakleni Islands just off the coast.The stunning island of Hvar is a mix of idyllic beaches, historic small towns and beautiful countryside. Within easy reach of numerous other islands, it offers the most upscale escape in Croatia.
The landscape of Hvar is characterised by vineyards, olive groves and fragrant fields of lavender. These are an attraction in themselves and make for a lovely day out if you want to get out of town. In summer, there’s a big festival dedicated to the island’s lavender where it’s celebrated in all sorts of events.
If you prefer to head for the beach, there is lots of choice. While Hvar has a small beach near the town, the best ones are a little further out. Wander down to Pokinji Dol first, then on to the amazing Mekićevica. If you would rather go by sea, it’s easy to take a water taxi instead. Go a bit further and stop by Milna or the secluded bay at Sveta Nedjelja.
It’s well worth setting some time aside for Hvar’s Old Town. A small town that attracts big crowds, you will find a good range of cafés, bars and restaurants to spend your days, as well as historic sights. The main square is right beside the landmark St Stephen’s Cathedral, while the huge fortress, Fortica, towers over everything. If you feel energetic, you might want to head up there as the view back down is particularly fine. Elsewhere, you’ll find a Benedictine Convent and Franciscan Monastery.
It’s not all about the past though, as Hvar is also big on sporting challenges and top-flight nightlife. The Hvar Adventure centre will take care of your climbing, cycling and sky diving needs (among others), while celebrated clubs like Carpe Diem bring the party to the waterside. More musically eclectic, the Hvar Summer Festival takes you right through the season with performances in venues all over town.
If you would like to visit somewhere more serene, the rest of the island is generally quieter than Hvar Town. Stari Grad is the island’s oldest, and it’s pleasant to potter around its streets, squares and harbourside. From here, you can also catch a ferry over to Split. If you have other mainland adventures in mind, you can disembark closer to Makarska and Mount Biokovo if you head down to Sucaraj on Hvar’s eastern coast.
