With Borik-Zadar beach just a short drive away, Villa Vasilija is conveniently close to an area with shops, bars and restaurants – the nearest are just 1.5km away. Zadar is an impressive coastal city with history, culture, beautiful green spaces and an irresistible waterfront. Look out for its intriguing Sea Organ and Sun Salutation to feel at one with the power of nature. An archipelago of islands lies just across the water, while inland, you have glorious National Parks to explore – don’t miss Plitvice Lakes to the north and Krka to the south.Pleasingly well connected to the nearby Kornati Islands, the city of Zadar combines modernity and history. Its Old Town and waterfront are the parts to see, with several landmarks worth making time for. The Roman Forum is one, found alongside the Archbishop’s Palace and the Church of St Donat. The Cathedral of St Anastasia is another, providing incredible views across the region if you climb the bell tower.
Artefacts from Roman times can be seen at one of the city’s more recent additions, The Museum of Ancient Glass. Found in Cosmacendi Palace, the museum enjoys lovely views over Jazine Harbour and offers glassmaking workshops. The Archaeological Museum, founded in 1832, is the second-oldest museum in Croatia and houses more than 100,000 artefacts.
Elsewhere, you can stop for a break in Vladimira Nazora Park, which sits between the Old Town and the city’s modern area. The adjacent Five Wells Square is a photogenic landmark situated close to the waterfront. From here, cultural attractions, including the National Museum, the Croatian National Theatre and the impressive Cathedral of St Anastasia, are a short walk away.
It’s pleasant to take a relaxed stroll around Foša Harbour, along the city walls or through People’s Square – considered the centre of life in Zadar since medieval times. Also, don’t miss the wonderful Sea Organ, which uses wave power to make sound, and the Sun Salutation. These intriguing art installations are the creation of Croatian architect Nikola Bašić, with the latter definitely the place to watch the sunset. If you are into such things, Zadar also hosts a Full Moon Festival on the relevant night each July.
The Kornati Islands offer plenty of opportunities for boat trips, with the lengthy Ugljan directly across the water. This mountainous isle offers beaches and beautiful areas of nature that are great for hiking and biking. The island’s main centres, such as Preko, Kuklijca and Ugljan village, line the coast closest to Zadar, while the island’s western side provides the rugged countryside.
There’s much to stay on the mainland for, with Croatia’s glorious National Parks extending in all directions. Paklenica, Krka and Plitvice Lakes demonstrate the real natural beauty of the country, all within a 45-90 minutes drive of Zadar. At Excellence Luxury Villas we pride ourselves on going that little bit further for our guests.
