A lesser-known destination in North Dalmatia, Vinjerac is a charming village that lies around 40 minutes from Zadar and a little further from Šibenik. A village centre of old ruins and a pretty fishing harbour, enjoy a fantastic mountain backdrop. It’s home to the highly-rated seafood restaurant Pece, while the natural wonders of the nearby Paklenica National Park ensure there are lots of scenic excursions to take. The small village of Vinjerac lies on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast and serves as a good base for exploring the beautiful surrounding area and the region’s better-known cities. While not full of landmark sights, the village is pleasantly historical, and the quaint harbour offers lovely views.
Just across the water, you’ll find the Paklenica National Park, a mountaineering destination that attracts climbers from across the world. The rugged limestone landscape – a land of spectacular caves, canyons and cliffs – is ideal for adventurous hikers, and there are many established routes to explore. There are also some areas that offer cycling routes.
You won’t need to be experienced in such sports to enjoy Paklenica, with guidance available for beginners and those who just want to appreciate the stunning scenery. Passes for one day or multiple days are available if you want to visit the park. Head further north, and you can also visit the beautiful Plitvice Lakes, while the also spectacular Krka National Park is closer still, located just north of Šibenik.
Elsewhere, the region offers historic cities with top-class attractions. It’s easy enough to travel to magnificent Šibenik or Split from Vinjerac – they are around 60 and 90 minutes away, respectively. Closer still is the city of Zadar, a destination which is becoming ever-more popular. Offering island excursions and water-sport adventures, Zadar has another interesting water-based attraction in the form of its Sea Organ – a musical experiment powered by the waves. The same architect also created the solar-powered Sun Salutation with its fantastic light show. Old town sights such as Zadar Cathedral, the Forum and the Church of St Donat also bring visitors to the city.
You are sure to want to see Šibenik too, a significant city around halfway between Zadar and Split. Its finest attraction is undoubtedly the World Heritage Site, St James’ Cathedral. This stone-built cathedral dates back to the 15th century and is a fusion of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. Look out for the wall of 71 grotesque faces based on citizens of the city.
Another nod to Šibenik’s past comes in the form of its four forts – St Michael’s, St John, Barone and St Nikola. St Michael’s Fort has been restored in recent years and now features an open-air theatre. You can also discover the origins of the city at this important landmark. In summer, the nearby Barone Fort doubles as an open-air cinema.al wonders of the nearby Paklenica National Park ensure there are lots of scenic excursions to take.
