Maison Du Prats France
Holiday Home Rental Description
This chic villa beside the Dordogne river is the best of both worlds. Set apart from it all on land with apple orchards and vineyards, you can still walk to the nearest town. The walled courtyard houses a private pool, grape vines, and a stone grill where the chef of the family can experiment. Inside, the classical sitting room contrasts with the other modern, playful decor. Each bedroom has the luxury of an en suite bathroom, and you’ll adore the master suite’s gorgeous balcony (imagine a moonlit night with a bottle of wine).
Lovers of the country will have plenty to do – your holiday villa comes with bicycles to explore the area. Golfers must try the 18-hole course at Chateau de Vigiers, and fishermen will naturally flock to the river. The nearby towns of Gensac (3 km) and Pessac-sur-Dordogne (1 km) have restaurants and shops close at hand (no car required).
The closest airport is in Bergerac (40 km). Simply follow the Dordogne river east (perhaps stopping at the lovely chateaux and wineries along the way) and you’ll be there. Another place to visit is Saint-Émilion (25 km), an excellent red wine producer of the nearby Bordeaux region. Maison du Prats is wonderfully located 40 m from the charming Dordogne river yet close to many restaurants, shops and other amenities to be found in both Pensac (1 km ) and Gensac (3 km), two lovely villages nestled in this beautiful rural department in the South of France.
For larger food shops there are supermarkets nearby in Castillon and St Foy La Grande, a 13th century bastide town facing the Dordogne river. Stop here to enjoy a coffee in the square, take a walk along the river or if you are around on Saturday morning you will find shopping a real delight. There are also several local markets on during the weekdays.
During July and August the re-enactment of the last battle of the 100 years war is a spectacle not to be missed!
A 20 minutes drive will take you to Saint-Émilion, one of the principal red wine areas of Bordeaux along with the Médoc, Graves and Pomerol. Saint-Émilion’s history goes back to prehistoric times and is a World Heritage site, with fascinating Romanesque Churches, catacombs and the fantastic monolithic church made from a single block of stone.
For avid golfers, experience Chateau de Vigiers 18 hole, par 72 championship course designed by Donald Steel.
The city of Bergerac, with its international airport, can be easily reached in about 30 minutes. A visit to the old town standing out for its medieval architecture, narrow streets full of local boutiques and good restaurants, is highly recommended. Here, you will also find the unmissable Maisons de Vins and will have the opportunity to take a tour along the Route de Vins de Bergerac.
The city of Bordeaux (1 h drive) is among the world’s major wine industry centres. Bordeaux wine has been produced in the region since the eighth century.
A lovely countryside interspersed with medieval, bastide towns where fairytale châteaux rise from the morning mist, a paradise for food lovers (all the Perigordian specialities such as Foie Gras, confit d’oie, canard and mushrooms of all types are in abundance) and a haven for nature and outdoor sport enthusiasts are a the key ingredients that make the Dordogne a special destination, suitable for all ages.
