Indeed, this area is a paradise for gourmands, not only because of the wealth of welcoming restaurants from traditional French bistros to high-end establishments, but also thanks to the many markets that take place across villages and towns (including Marchés Gourmands on summer evenings in late July and August). Historic Sarlat-la-Canéda (30km) has a particularly fine reputation for its gastronomy – depending on the season, look out for truffles, walnuts, honey, chestnuts, cheeses, foie gras and other delights of the Périgord Noir.
