The sunken ruins of Olous can still be seen on calm days, adding to the rich cultural heritage of modern Elounda. The villa enjoys a fabulous beachfront position just ten metres from the sea and a five minute walk from the centre of Elounda. Elounda boasts a wonderful array of traditional and cosmopolitan eateries, gorgeous boutiques, trendy bars and a captivating Blue Flag sandy beach. Nearby, guests can enjoy Plaka, the historic island of Spinalonga, the Archaelogical Museum of Agios Nikolaos, ancient Lato and ancient Driros, Knossos and Chrissi Island.
Villa Olous is a dreamy property with hidden nooks and crannies where you can relax with your holiday read, enjoy a glass of your favourite tipple and enjoy the magical scenery. There are courtyard gardens, simplistic yet utterly stylish furnishings and plenty of cool treats. The interior pays respect to minimalism yet functions so well and offers so much. Almost every angle of this stunning property offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Cretan sea. Its outdoor spaces are just as brilliantly thought through as the internal ones with cool furnishings and a wonderful ambience. The terrace is a sociable space with a wonderful pool and jacuzzi surrounded by the most sumptuous of loungers and hidden shaded seating. As you walk around the garden, you will spot immaculate, landscaped borders and ancient olive trees planted in the perfect spot to capture your eye. The design of the villa features hot water recycling, electric window shutters and top-of-the-range technology.
With access to the main terrace and infinity pool, the living area is open plan in design with super cool sofas and chairs facing the giant wall-mounted television. Four of the five bedrooms enjoy ensuite bathrooms with the final one enjoying use of another private contemporary wonder. The bedrooms offer a mix of super kingsize, kingsize and twin beds, all beautifully adorned with luxury cotton satin and a choice of pillows. Though they are similar in styling, the rooms all enjoy special features such as a forest green headboard that perfectly matches the corian sink and shower and the lush bedroom plants or hints of terracotta. Some open to balconies and others to the beautifully designed garden. The bathrooms are incredible, all different, all totally luxurious and all coming with fluffy bathrobes, towels, slippers, fragrant toiletries and shaving kits. There are a couple of mini kitchen areas sprinkled around too so that you can help yourselves to cool drinks while enjoying moments of peace or perhaps you might enjoy the shisha or the Cohiba cigars. There is even an electric scooter to get about.
Villa Olous is amazing. You certainly won’t regret this beachfront pick!Villa Olous sits beachfront in the wonderful, upmarket resort of Elounda. Elounda is nestled on the island’s emerald-swept coast, very popular with the rich and famous. Greece’s ex Prime Minister spent his summers in Elounda and the resort is frequently visited by the royal family of Saudi Arabia. Elounda was used for the filming of the BBC television series ‘Who Pays the Ferryman?’ and is featured in Victoria Hislop’s ‘The Island’. This superb seaside town revolves around its colourful harbour and its bustling main square. You will discover plenty of authentic Greek tavernas and friendly bars as well as its magical Blue Flag sandy beach. The quieter Driros Beach is a fifteen minute walk south along the coastal path. If you are walking south you will also come to the remains of the submerged ancient city of Olous. Five huge stone windmills were excavated and today they stand next to the bridge and are open to the public.
Overlooking the island of Spinalonga, the picturesque village of Plaka is very close by, in Mirabello Bay. You will receive such a warm welcome at Plaka’s tavernas and restaurants. There are some fabulous walks around the village, through olive groves or along to the neighbouring villages of Kampia and Kokkino Chorio. The pebbly beach, backed by tamarisk trees, is delightful with a charming promenade. Plaka was originally a quaint fishing village which offered access to Spinalonga Island when it was a colony for lepers. Now it is a sophisticated, peaceful resort with natural beauty and spectacular views. Hikers enjoy the numerous caves around the mountains. Plaka offers a good selection of seaside bars and restaurants.
The island of Spinalonga has a fascinating, if sad, history. The name of Spinalonga was given by the Venetians. Spina means ‘thorn’ and longa means ‘long’. In the 20th century (1903 -1957) Spinalonga was used as a leper colony. The lepers used a tunnel known as ‘Dante’s Gate’ in order to enter the island. Once on the island, the patients received food, water and medical attention. For half a century, this barren rocky island was a home to life’s outcasts who lived in extreme pain. As science progressed and a cure for leprosy was discovered, the lepers were cured and the hospital shut down in 1957. Nowadays, the island is uninhabited. It is a recognised archaeological site with one of the few examples of Venetian fortress building in Eastern Mediterranean. It is a popular tourist attraction with boats leaving from Plaka, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos.
You may decide that you want to see more of Crete. The island is mountainous with a high range crossing from west to east. The island also boasts numerous gorges which are amazing to visit such as the Samaria Gorge, the Imbros Gorge and the Kourtaliotiko Gorge. The island is Greek’s fifth largest island so you will not be able to see everything in one holiday! There are some sublime beaches, some of which are on the other side of the island. There are a number of islands, islets and rocks that hug the coast. The big cities are Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, Lerapetra, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. The island’s archaeological sites include the Minoan sites of Knossos, Malia and Phaistos. The island offers a fabulous range of activities and adventures. There are unique beaches, canyons, falls, trekking, kayaking and many watersports. Crete is a very friendly island and the food is absolutely delicious. Many of the beaches offer a wonderful selection of watersports inlcuding sup, surfing, wind surfing and water skiing. One of the most diving spots is the site of the sunken city of Olous.
