Within a 10-minute drive, Lefkimmi is a charming small town where you can access useful amenities including a supermarket, bank and post office. There are cafés and restaurants to try, and several more beaches are a few minutes away.
Corfu Town, the capital of the island, is just under one hour’s drive from Lefkimmi, and also accessible via bus or boat. The town may surprise with its mix of Italian, French and British influences, evident in the grand Spianada Square and the chic covered terrace of the Liston. In southern Corfu, Lefkimmi retains a traditional, small town feel. Not a place for nightlife or tourist attractions, Lefkimmi shows an authentic side of island life. A small river runs through the town which offers restaurants, cafés and useful amenities for the visitors staying in the area. While Lefkimmi lies inland, it’s only about 2km from several beaches, such as Bouka and Alikes.
You can take a bus from Lefkimmi to the capital, Corfu Town, and it’s one not to miss. Full of surprises, this richly historic town punches above its weight when it comes to cultural attractions and landmark sights.
A nod to a period of British rule, the 19th-century Palace of St Michael and St George is a Neoclassical mansion originally built as the residence of the British High Commissioner. It’s now the location of Corfu’s excellent Museum of Asian Art. With impressive collections of Japanese, Chinese, central and south east Asian art, it holds around 15,000 pieces. You can also tour the palace itself, which is one of the highlights of the town.
Another is the magnificent Spianada Square, which acts as a logical meeting place for locals. With its landscaped gardens, water features and bandstand, it feels more British than Greek – it even has a cricket pitch. All this is explained by a near 50-year period when Corfu was under British rule. Cricket isn’t big elsewhere in Greece, but on Corfu it’s a different story. Next to the Spianada is the French built covered gallery, the Liston. It’s now lined with cafés which make going out for a coffee in Corfu a very chichi affair.
You will find numerous churches around the town, the most famous being Saint Spyridon’s Church with its distinctive red dome. It’s here that the island’s patron saint was laid to rest. Many house interesting pieces of art, among them the 11th-century Byzantine Church of St Jason & St Sosipater.Other cultural highlights in town include the Municipal Gallery and the Archaeological Museum, with exhibits from the prehistoric to Roman period.
Be sure to visit either the Old Fortress or New Fortress for a wonderful view over the area. The latter is only comparatively new – it dates back to the 15th century. The former is now home to a university music department, so if you listen carefully you may be able to hear its students playing as you tackle the considerable climb to the summit. When you return, be sure to spend some time wandering through the evocative streets of the town’s medieval centre, the Campiello, and see why it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.At Excellence Luxury Villas we pride ourselves on going that little bit further for our guests.
