For a dose of culture, head to Heraklion (18 minutes’ drive), a town steeped in Ancient history. There you can visit the Palace of Knossos, which housed the Minotaur once upon a time, or visit the breathtaking 16th century Venetian fortress on the water.
Back home, fire up the barbecue while the kids play on the lawn for an al fresco dinner, or walk 500m into the town of Episkopi, where you will find quaint local tavernas serving traditional Cretan fare. You will easily fall into the serene, easygoing Mediterranean way of life here.
