One of Rhodes’ must-visit towns, Lindos is found on the south-eastern side of the island. It’s well known for its sophisticated nightlife, with high-quality dining at rooftop restaurants a hallmark of the town. Lovely beaches such as St Paul’s Bay are another great reason to head to Lindos, along with sights such as the Ancient Theatre, the Temple of Athena and the mighty clifftop Acropolis which enjoys the most stunning of sea views.
A scenic drive of around 50 minutes will take you from Lindos to the capital, Rhodes Town. Here you can discover yet more landmark sights such as The Palace of the Grand Masters, as well as the vibrant new town area, Mandraki, and a host of museums, churches, restaurants and entertainment venues. Around the island, you shouldn’t miss areas of natural beauty such as Prasonisi Beach, the Valley of the Butterflies and Kallithea Springs. From charming country villages to big, bold coastal resorts, Rhodes offers plenty of variety. Richly historic and packed with must-see landmarks, there’s a lot you will want to see during your stay.
At the top of the island, the capital is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. Rhodes Town is home to The Palace of the Grand Masters, the main attraction of this impressive UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a tour of the palace and you can see at least part of this huge fortress for yourself – there are often exhibitions and performances at the palace too, and you will also find Rhodes’ Archaeological Museum there.
Other notable attractions in Rhodes Town include the Museum of Modern Greek Art and the impressive National Theatre, while Mandraki Port is a pleasant place to take a waterside walk. Elli Beach and Rhodes Aquarium are just up the road, and there’s more of historic interest in the Street of the Knights, Suleman Mosque and the Roloi Clock Tower which offers a fantastic view over the city.
The best nightlife on the island, or at least the biggest concentration of clubs and bars, is found on Orfanidou Street. Alternatively, try the Rhodes Casino for a night out, or take in a show at the National Theatre.
Outside Rhodes city, outdoor attractions like the Valley of the Butterflies, to the west of Faliraki, and the Epta Piges (Seven Springs), near Kolymbia, are well worth a visit. These idyllic spots with areas of woodland showcase the natural beauty of the island to the full, and are great for walking. If you would prefer a swim, the warming waters of Kallithea Springs may tempt you – this beautiful seaside spa is worth the modest entrance fee.
If you’re after sporting activity, Rhodes has everything from scuba-diving to golf and horse-riding, and with such expansive areas of countryside, cycling is a real pleasure. Surfers make their way south to Prasonisi Beach, also known for its landmark lighthouse.
There are numerous fine beaches further north – Afantou, Agathi and Lindos are found on the eastern coast, while the quieter west offers up Ialyssos, Kameiros and Soroni. Faliraki is perhaps the biggest and best-known Rhodes resort. About 35km north of Lindos, it has a large beach and lots of family attractions, as well as nightlife.
Lindos itself is a more sophisticated affair, full of pretty white houses, rooftop terraces and historic treasures like the Lindos Acropolis. You can also take a cruise between Lindos and Rhodes Town, with stops at a couple of wonderful beaches along the way.
