Casale I Platani is a lovingly restored farmhouse located in the rolling hills and olive groves of the Lazio countryside. Close to the borders with Tuscany and Umbria, this charming home is the ideal base for exploring villages and towns across these areas.
As the villa sits within a vast garden which spans 2000m2 and is enveloped by a stunning rural landscape, it is a wonderful place to stay to get away from it all. There is plenty of space here; there are five bedrooms and three living rooms which can accommodate 10 guests in comfort.
As you enter the villa you will feel right at home; this original farm building has been furnished and decorated in a cosy and welcoming manner and is full of character which can be seen in the exposed stone, open fireplaces and the wooden beams. The main living room is on the ground floor and is an open-plan room with comfy sofas gathered around the fireplace plus a large dining table. This room is the perfect place to gather in the evenings to play some board games or use the projector to watch a film together. The home boasts two more living rooms where you can curl up with a good book from the packed bookshelves or where the kids can have some space of their own.
When you wish to make your morning coffee or prepare a meal for everyone, the country-style kitchen is spacious and well-equipped. You will find everything you need here from a large range oven to a blender.
The villa is suitable for a larger family or a group of friends as there are five bedrooms you can choose from. One bedroom, a double, is located on the first floor and accessed separately making it ideal for grandparents or a couple looking for a little more privacy. The other bedrooms are located on the ground floor, there is one more double bedroom available, plus three rooms which can be set up as twin or double rooms. This flexibility means that the house can be tailored to suit the requirements of your group.
Encircling the house there is a large and lush garden with tall trees, lawned areas and beds filled with native herbs and flowers. You are sure to want to spend lots of time outdoors dining al-fresco, swimming in the private pool or gazing up at the stars from the hot tub in the evening.
The land around the home lends itself to walking, hiking, bike riding and exploring on horseback. There is plenty of wide-open space where you can get in touch with nature and soak in the sunshine and amazing views.
Though the home is rurally located, there are a few eateries dotted around the nearby hills, so you do not have to travel far to dine out. You can also discover a range of shops, cafes and restaurants 7km away in the village of Marta. Marta is a pretty village close to the shores of Lake Bolsena. Hailing from the medieval era, you can wander the winding historic streets, shop for locally produced goods and dine al-fresco in the lively village square. From the village you may also head out on lakeside walks or even take a boat on to the water. It is a lovely place to visit, especially during feast days and festivals such as La Barabbata when processions and parties fill the streets.
The lake itself is a wonderful attraction. It is Europe’s largest volcanic lake and has a number of great beaches which you can visit. The water here is crystal-clear and great for swimming and there are lots of water sports on offer too, including windsurfing, paddle boarding and kayaking.
If you would like to visit a bustling city then head to Viterbo which is 19km away and known for its historic centre and also for its natural hot springs.Casale I Platani is set amidst beautiful farmland and olive groves in rural Lazio which is a brilliant base for a holiday. The home is ideally set for those who enjoy spending time outdoors in breathtaking surroundings. Near the house you can access hiking and walking trails or see the landscape by bicycle or on an organised horse trek. A little further out you can also visit the gorgeous Lake Bolsena or unwind in the hot springs in Viterbo, meaning there are countless opportunities for spending your days outside in the sunshine.
Though the home is located in the countryside, you do not have to travel very far to find a wide range of shops, cafes and restaurants. There are some restaurants dotted around the hills within a few kilometres of the home, and there are plenty more in the village of Marta which is 7km away.
Set on the shores of Lake Bolsena, Marta is a wonderful place to visit for lunch or to wander the pretty, medieval streets shopping for local handicrafts in the quaint shops. History lovers will enjoy looking around the ancient churches and the clock tower which is built on the remains of the fortress which once defended the area. From here you can also visit some of the lovely lakeside beaches, take part in a vast programme of water sports or book on to a boat trip. A popular boat trip is to visit the small island of Isola Bisentina which is in the centre of the lake. The island has a rich history and has been a refuge for popes as well as a place of pilgrimage and today you can walk around the island, looking out for the seven historic chapels and taking in the amazing views. Aside from delightful rural scenes and charming villages, Lazio is littered with farms and vineyards which grow the delicious produce that fills the market stalls and restaurants. A great thing to do while visiting this area is to head to a family-owned vineyard to learn more about the wine making process, tour the grounds and taste some samples. At 9km away from the villa, Antica Cantina Leonardi is a fantastic winery to visit, owned by the Leonardi family. The wine here is stored in a volcanic underground room which is hundreds of years old and great fun to explore. You could also order a charcuterie board to have with your wine or try one of the restaurants in the lively town of Montefiascone. If you would like to spend the day in the city then Viterbo is a great option and is 19km away. One of the highlights is the Palazzo dei Papi which was the home of the papacy for hundreds of years from the 12th century onwards. The city also has a brilliant range of restaurants, shops and bars and an awe-inspiring cathedral for you to discover. Many people flock to Viterbo however for its famous natural hot springs or its exclusive spas where you can also book yourself a treatment or two.
