The jewel in this villa’s incredible crown is the covered and climatised private pool – a surreal and magical experience to enjoy while holidaying in this incredible mountain region. Casa Tipica is situated in Sao Jorge, one of the most scenic islands in the archipelago of the Azores, and is within walking distance of supermarkets, cafes and restaurants. Featuring a rugged coastline and backed by a steep mountain range, the area is famous for its spectacular hiking trails, as well as for being one the best places to witness the blue whale migration.
There’s plenty to see while holidaying here, including Faja da Caldeira do Santo Cristo, a natural lagoon where you can catch clams, the Faja dos Cubres lake with its crystal clear waters, and the Faja do Ouvidor with its stunning natural pools. This beautiful nature reserve is the nesting site for many species of seabirds and is an area where many flowers endemic to the region grow, making it an ideal spot for photographers and nature lovers in general.

The capital of Sao Jorge is Velas, and it is here that you’ll find several artistically designed churches, including the Church of Santa Barbara, which houses a collection of hand-painted tiles depicting scenes from Saint’s life. We recommend that souvenir-hunters check out the Mantella de Sao Jorge that you’ll find on offer here; brightly coloured blankets made by hand using techniques that have been passed down through generations. You won’t find much in the way of beaches here in Sao Jorge, so we recommend heading to the coastal town of Calheta, home to one of the only golden sandy beaches in the region and an area popular with tourists and locals alike.
