With its sub-tropical climate, Madeira is a fabulous holiday choice that also boasts numerous cultural twists, a colourful capital, botanical gardens, amazing fine dining, beautiful water channels and the most sensational scenery in its mighty mountain landscape. Villa Serrado is located in Canhas, a suburb of Ponta do Sol, a village best known for the traditional cultivation of sugar cane. The local rum, sugar cane syrup and ‘Bolo de Mel’, the delicious honey cake are all made in the area. Calheta, a fabulous resort, is just up the road and Funchal, the buzzy capital is just along the coast in the other direction. Villa Serrado enjoys this wonderfully central location which is brilliant for exploring the whole island. You will quickly fall in love with Madeira’s beauty, cuisine, cultural treats, friendly locals and massive range of activities. In a nod to the island’s past, you will also notice some quirky British heritage.
Throughout this gorgeous villa you will discover a calm, neutral colour palette, tasteful furnishings, marbled bathrooms and the very best of fittings. With a mountain backdrop and astonishing sea views from almost every angle, your stay will be very refreshing and a real break away from everyday life. The villa is perfect for large families and groups of friends.
The villa’s living room is elegant and wonderfully styled with sofas placed perfectly to enjoy the view and the cable television. It is drowned in natural light, enhanced by its double  height aspect. Doors open to the terrace. The large chef’s dream of a kitchen enjoys glossy white cabinetry and excellent, oversized appliances, inviting you to prepare delicious meals using fresh local ingredients. With a central island, it is a very sociable space which is open to the smart, sophisticated dining area. Here you will find a trendy table and chairs which again opens to the terrace and those views.
Villa Serrado offers four luxurious bedrooms, one of which is located on the first floor with direct access to the terrace. All of the bedrooms enjoy beautifully dressed, sumptuous kingsize beds, ensuite bathrooms and dressing rooms. Two of the bedrooms on the upper floor enjoy their own generous sized terrace. The bathrooms are amazing with large walk-in showers and one also enjoys a bath. The bright and airy hallway on the second floor boasts a spacious, furnished terrace that offers stunning views of the ocean and the surrounding hillside. It is a great spot to disappear to with your holiday book and a glass of your favourite tipple.
The main terrace is incredibly relaxing with its gorgeous infinity pool. You can laze on a sunbed listening to the cool waterspout over the pool, enjoy the sunshine and take the occasional dip to cool off. Your master barbecue chefs can be preparing a feast in the covered barbecue area or perhaps pizzas ready for the pizza oven. The alfresco lounge area is perfect for enjoying a pre-dinner drink and watching the glorious sunsets. Bliss!Villa Serrado is located on the hillside in Canhas, a suburb of Ponta do Sol, a five hundred year old traditional village on the sunny south coast of Madeira. Ponta do Sol enjoys a fabulous climate, friendly locals and a charming village unaffected by tourism. This area is famous for the banana and sugar cane plantations that are sprinkled over the terraced hills. You will discover delightful surfing beaches and a diving centre in the village. Ponta do Sol enjoys spectacular sunrises and sunsets. From this excellent central spot you can enjoy many wonderful strolls and fantastic contrasting scenery from the rocky coast to terraced hills to the suntropical mountains. The vibrant capital is 25 minutes away and Ribeira Brava Village is just 5 minutes away.
For those that love the outdoors, Madeira is hard to beat. For those that love exhilarating, adrenaline rush sports, canyoning is very popular. It takes place in a mountainous watercourse where you will swim, jump and do rappels in waterfalls to overcome the obstacles of nature. Madeira’s ‘levadas’ are famous. Visitors walk through open irrigation channels that were built from the fifteenth century, some through the lush Laurisilva Forest with wonderful mountain scenery. There are twenty five waterfalls at Rabacal which plunge down the mountain from over 100 metres above. It is only 10 km north of Calheta. Mountain biking is also popular though the mountains with peaks of over 1800 metres of altitude. Another way to see this glorious island is to take a paragliding trip. On the coast, visitors enjoy diving, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and whale, dolphin and turtle watching.
The historic town of Calheta dates back to 1430. Calheta’s Moorish style parish church is worth a visit with its wooden knot-work ceiling above the high altar and its 16th century ebony and silver tabernacle donated by King Manuel I. Close to the church is one of the island’s two surviving sugar mills which is now also a museum. For a wonderful afternoon activity in the town be sure to visit as you will also enjoy a complementary slice of delicious traditional honey cake and glass of poncha. Calheta’s modern marina and sandy beach are wonderful, offering a huge variety of watersports and boat trips. Loreto, 2 km east of Calheta enjoys a pretty 15th century chapel. Another wonderful chapel is the Chapel of the Three Kings at Lombo dos Reis. It has an interesting 16th century Flemish altar carving of the Adoration of the Magi. The Casa das Artes, a contemporary art centre is another good stop at Ponta do Este, just to the west of Calheta. Jardim do Mar is a very picturesque fishing village full of flower draped houses along its narrow alleyways. It is very pretty so get your cameras ready!
There are some fantastic restaurants in Madeira where you can taste local dishes such as garlic-basted espetada kebabs which you can wash down with the local tipples of sweet wine. There are plenty of chic bars and cute cafes. You can take a wine tasting tour on the south coast of the island. Funchal is a cosmopolitan, rejuvenated city full of high class restaurants, boutique shops and fantastic bars. The city is nestled in a fabulous natural amphitheatre facing the Atlantic with its mountain backdrop. For many years it has been one of the Atlantic cruise ship’s main ports of call. It is popular with day relaxers and night revellers and is known for its many festivals. Its New Year’s Eve Firework display is legendary but in June there is the Atlantic Festival International Fireworks Competition every Saturday. It boasts a spectacular carnival, a wine festival and a flower festival as well as a fairytale Christmas season.
