Everything at Villa Massapez has been impeccably thought-out, from the handsomely-crafted dining table for enjoying delicious family meals to the stunning artworks and lighting fixtures that are present throughout. The villa’s well-equipped kitchen is a true joy to cook in, with ample food preparation space and a wide range of high-quality appliances, cookware and utensils. The whole property is effortlessly chic from top to bottom, with dark wood kitchen units and gleaming black countertops, and a stylishly decorative chrome bannister to the staircase that ascends the first floor – all of this decadence is beautifully offset by the huge floor-to-ceiling windows throughout, that flood the villa with natural light as well as showcasing those incredible ocean views.
Villa Massapez has three bedrooms, two doubles and a twin room, and each is just as tastefully decorated and furnished as the common areas. All bedrooms are ensuite, making it extra convenient if you have two or more separate family groups staying together, and all comfortable feature beds, stylish furniture and breathtaking views. From your room, you’ll be able to step out onto your furnished private balcony – the ideal spot to enjoy a morning cuppa or an evening pre-dinner drink as you look out over the ocean.
The villa’s exterior won’t disappoint, with a large private pool which is easily accessible by steps and a selection of quality sun loungers on which to sunbathe or enjoy a good book – if you can tear your eyes away from the view, of course! Villa Massapez features a luxurious outdoor dining area with a built-in barbecue, perfect for alfresco meals. Cosy yet open to the surroundings, this fully-furnished area is sure to be the place you all retire to in the evenings to enjoy a glass of local wine and each other’s company as you watch the sunset over the Atlantic. Villa Massapez is located just outside of the small town of Lombada dos Marinheiros, an area of Calheta well known for its beautiful walking and hiking routes. You’ll also find a small supermarket and bar here. Calheta’s famous harbour promenade and all it has to offer in the way of restaurants, attractions and shopping opportunities is just a few minutes away and is sure to be where you’ll spend much of your time when you’re out of the villa. This historic and beautiful town is a hotspot for those who love all manner of outdoor pursuits, including hiking, biking, surfing, kayaking, windsurfing, scuba diving and paragliding, and you’ll find lots of companies in the local area offering courses and equipment hire. Calheta is also one of the most fantastic spots on the island for whale and dolphin-spotting, and you’ll find plenty of places offering whale-watching tours, fishing tours and boat trips along the marina.
Madeira is home to some beautiful beaches, and although most of them are pebbled or rocky, Calheta beach is the first imported sandy beach on the island. Located on the south coast, visitors here can enjoy the sunniest parts of the island, and the soft golden sands offer the perfect place to relax. The beach is split into two areas, with walls protecting the swimming area from high waves and strong currents, making it a safe place to enjoy the ocean with the children. Calheta beach has all the ingredients you need for spending a memorable day, with public showers and toilets for your convenience, a nearby supermarket, and restaurants and bars just a short walk up the promenade, including a fantastic beachside cafe that serves fruit platters and great coffee at very reasonable prices. The cafe plays music during the day and even has WiFi that reaches down to the beach, so be sure to get the password when you’re in there buying refreshments!  
Lovers of art and history will find plenty to enjoy in Calheta, too, including the town’s Mudas Museum, situated in a stunning cliff-top location. Here you’ll find a collection of contemporary Portuguese art dating from the 1960s to the present, although it’s worth knowing before you make the trip that the museum is only open Tuesday to Sunday.
