Bamburgh is a great holiday destination with fine dining, gorgeous shops, a fascinating museum and a dramatic, awe-inspiring castle. Located on the fabulous Northumberland coast between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Alnwick, the village has much to offer and is within easy reach of many of Northumberland’s charms. The village enjoys a landmark red phone box where you will enjoy astounding views, an ancient church and a beautiful beach. The castle views from the beach are amazing and you can walk to Seahouses admiring the gorgeous dunes along the way. At Seahouses you can take boat trips to the Farne Islands nature reserve and seabird sanctuary. There are many events held at the castle including ghost tours, dragon hunts, outdoor cinema screenings and music events. The RNLI Grace Darling Museum, dedicated to Grace Horsley Darling, tells the story of her brave rescue of nine men from a tragic shipwreck. Four years after the rescue Grace died of tuberculosis and was buried in St Aidan’s churchyard and money was raised to build a monument in her memory. The museum was set up one hundred years after the rescue but closed for a time in 2002 and reopened in 2007. The museum is located in Bamburgh Castle’s walled garden, the garden that Grace’s grandfather worked in. A place of worship was founded on the site of St Aidan’s Church in 635 by Saint Aidan who was called to Bamburgh from Iona by King Oswald to establish Christianity in his newly united Kingdom of Northumbria. The site of his death is marked by a simple shrine within the present church. The existing church building dates from the end of the 12th century.
Not far from Bamburgh View Cottage is the lovely Alnwick with its own historic castle where the Harry Potter movies were filmed. Under the Normans and for some time afterwards, Alnwick was the administrative town for the whole county of Northumberland. Today, the Alnwick District is famous for its unspoilt beauty and is one of the most picturesque areas of countryside. There are long sandy beaches, the Simonside and Cheviot hills and beautiful gardens. The Alnwick Garden is a very popular visitor attraction with its centrepiece being the Grand Cascade, a magnificent tumbling mass of water with an eruption of fountains sending 350 litres of water into the air. It also boasts an ornamental garden with symmetrical structured plants, a serpent garden full of water sculptures, a beautiful rose garden, a bamboo labyrinth which is a one way maze, a poison garden and a fantastic treehouse. Alnwick retains many of its ancient cobbled streets, narrow alleys and fine stone buildings of which many are now independent shops. The market place is the centre of local events including the Alnwick International Music Festival and farmer’s markets. The beautiful St. Michael’s Church was first built in Saxon times and later rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries. Barter Books is one of the largest second hand book shops in England with over 350,000 books to choose from. The Bakehouse Gallery is home to some wonderful contemporary art works. The Aln Valley Railway is very popular with holiday makers. You can take the train from the Lionheart Station next to the A1 and take the train to Alnmouth on the coast. On the outskirts of Alnwick you can explore Ratcheugh Observatory, an amazing 18th century folly with a viewing tower that boasts sensational 360 degree views of Alnwick and its castle and the Northumberland coast as far as Boulmer. Alnwick Castle is considered to be one of the finest castles in the country and the home of the Duke of Northumberland. Its magnificent grounds designed by Capability Brown are incredible. The castle boasts domineering medieval towers, a 14th century dungeon and amazing state rooms with paintings by Canaletto, Van Dyck and Titian.
