It’s impossible to miss the Parthenon in Athens, rising up over the city and illuminated at night. For most, these preserved columned ruins are the epitome of the ancient world. In the narrow streets of the city, you’ll find Byzantine churches, adorned with ancient mosaics, tucked in between street food restaurants serving gyros wraps and bakeries serving spanakopita. The Plaka is a shambling stretch of historic city centre which has been fully pedestrianised. Here, pavement cafés spill into streets and up stone steps, with wooden tables and chairs shaded by magenta bougainvillia, and souvenir shops sell trinkets. Outside of the historic centre, Athens is a surprisingly modern metropolis with a buzzing dockside ready to whisk you to the islands.
