For many, heading to Italy is like going on a delicious pilgrimage. In Italy, pleasure rules – here is a country to explore with the senses. History lovers and art connoisseurs head to the country all year long to take in the art galleries and museums. The birthplace of the Renaissance, the architecture is striking and prepared to flaunt itself at every step.
As a small city, Florence is easy to explore. You can leave your apartment, walk around and take it all in, whether you have a plan or not. In fact, just heading out and getting lost is an absolute joy. But of course, there’s a great deal to see and do if you prefer to feel prepared with an itinerary. Famous landmarks include the Duomo and Piazza della Repubblica. With a vast array of art galleries, we’d recommend the Uffizi Gallery, the Academia Gallery, Michelangelo’s David, the Pitti and Strozzi palaces and the Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella Cathedrals. There are also many places to stop and treat yourself to a gift or pick up a souvenir for a loved one back home.
You can’t come to Italy and not explore the gastronomic opportunities here. Florence is a foodies city. Here you can find all your firm favourites, such as pasta, pizza and spoonfuls of tantalising gelato. But you can also try something more unusual and unique to the city itself. The central market is a must-see of the area, where you can wander, pick up fresh produce or eat. Everything you could dream of is here. It truly is a place of wonder. Sample wine, try some cheese and buy some gorgeous fresh bread, fruits and vegetables. This is one of the best places to immerse yourself in a world that blends locals with tourists seamlessly. There are also opportunities to make your own pizza, pasta and gelato, both in Florence and further afield, should you take a day trip. Why not take home some classic recipes?
In the tourist areas, you’ll find many restaurants clamouring for attention. These are usually more expensive and crowded but conveniently placed and almost always open. There are many restaurants locals frequent where you can enjoy more unusual dishes – many of which you’ll probably not have tried. How can you spot such a place? You might see the locals standing to eat, there’ll be particular opening and closing times (Italians value their leisure time greatly), and you may not understand the menu. Beyond Florence, why not take a day trip into the gorgeous Tuscan wilds, the beauty of Siena, the quirkiness of Pisa and the colour of Cinque Terre.
