Tucked behind Garibaldi station, Isola is one of the more interesting places to stay in the city – you’re far more likely to find some live music than a pretentious boutique. Papaya Nut is set in a classic casa di ringhiera, the building style so typical of Milan, and it offers a good base to stay in the city. The position on the upper ground floor of the building is a slight shame, as it means there isn’t a tonne of natural light, but whoever designed it has done an excellent job with what they have.

*You’ll have to go up a short flight of stairs to reach the front door of the flat
*When we visited, we couldn’t get the wi-fi to work, but it is there
*One person can sleep on a sofa bed in the living room, but they wouldn’t have much privacy
*On the whole, the flat doesn’t get much natural light
