It’s quite rare to find a home with an interior that contrasts so starkly with the world beyond its walls. Inside this apartment, the walls, kitchen and many of the furnishings come in dazzling white or muted greys, which makes for a very soothing atmosphere — it’s very easy to imagine reclining on the sofa with the curtain billowing in the breeze coming in from the open French doors. Step out onto the balcony, however, and it couldn’t be any more different as Funchal provides an explosion of vivid colours — the blue of the Atlantic Ocean, the distinctive terracotta of the rooftops, the greens of the towering tropical trees. It’s enough to make you want to get out and explore, and the prime location in among the cobblestone streets of the Old Town means that you’re close to both the seafront and plenty of bars and restaurants, too.
