Located in the charming remodelled fishing village of Binibeca Vell on the island of Menorca, there is plenty to see and do in the nearby vicinity. The villa is just 500m from Binibeca beach and is surrounded by white limestone houses. The village was tastefully restored in 1972 as it was so popular with regional and international holidaymakers.
Made up of a labyrinth of winding streets with a small commercial centre, Binibeca is located at the southeastern tip of Menorca close to its capital, Mahon. There are plenty of restaurants and bars, though the island has a more relaxed, languid feel compared to its Balearic neighbours. Some special Menorquin delicacies to try to include lobster stew, baked squid or octopus and sobrassada – paprika-spiced sausages. Xoriguer gin is the local beverage to sample, especially with cloudy lemonade.
Binibeca beach is a heavenly ribbon of fine white sand with a backdrop of cliffs and lush pine forest – the cove is perfect for swimming in the crystal clear waters. There are a fish restaurant and lots of picnic tables. In the Binibeca area, there are also four other smaller coves – Biniancolla, Binisafuller, Biniparratx and Binidali. The area is also famous for diving, especially among a shipwreck.
Snorkelling and kayaking are also popular activities here. Menorca has 216km of coastline, so there are plenty of beaches to visit. Another great choice is the Calas Coves, just 17km from the villa, with its swirling shades of blue water framed by cliffs. The coves have a mystical quality beloved by many.
A trip to Port Mao in the capital of Mahon is a must-do – it is the second deepest natural harbour in the world. Descend the stairs to find luxury yachts and a famous gin distillery. There are lots of art galleries and quirky boutiques along the 2km road. Menorca is famous for shoes – try to pick up some locally-made avarcas sandals.
For a thrilling experience within nature, check out the Jeep Safari Menorca. Local guides take groups of passengers in 4x4s on the backroads of the island, spotting exotic flora and fauna. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about local life and the animals that inhabit the island. Menorca was made a Biosphere resort in 1993, which ensures that its natural beauty is protected – Menorquin people take exceptional care of their island.
To get a great view of the island, head to the mirador – Spanish for a viewpoint – of El Toro, Menorca’s highest peak. To reach the top, there is a moderate hike of 2 hours – pilgrims will be rewarded with a magnificent panorama. Alternatively, a unique way to see the island is by paragliding over it – from El Toro, glide in tandem with an instructor back to the ground. Perfect for an adventurous day out.
