On the edge of a village with soaring mountains and rolling countryside as glorious surroundings is spacious Villa Carlotta. It’s the perfect place for recharging your batteries, with its relaxing setting close to the town of Menaggio on Lake Como.
Hikes start the moment you can drag yourself away from the villa. And the village centre with its small choice of amenities is just a few minutes’ drive away. Hire bikes to explore the countryside with the family on sunny afternoons. Then return to the villa to relax and unwind in its spacious rooms and extensive grounds.
The villa has a total of seven double bedrooms, with one being adjacent to a kitchenette and living room. This, in addition to the nursery room with cot and child’s bed, makes Villa Carlotta ideally suited to larger families with younger children.
And there’s plenty to keep both children and adults entertained around the villa’s leafy gardens. Splash around in the swimming pool, play a few sets on your private tennis court, or simply just enjoy the atmosphere of al-fresco family meals.
The glow of the drawing room fireplace is a welcome sight on chilly nights as you gather together on sofas in front of the flames. There’s also an inviting feel to the formal dining room, with doors opening out into the garden where evenings can continue under the stars.
Short drives along the shores of Lake Como from Villa Carlotta uncover many pretty towns and cities. Famous Como is under an hour away, with the city full of historic buildings to admire and a waterfront promenade to enjoy leisurely walks along. There’s also a funicular railway that runs up the mountainside to a picturesque village; the perfect place to take in sweeping city and lake views.
Stately villas also dot the Lake Como area and ferry services easily connect one shore to another. Take a ferry from Como over to Bellagio in around 45 minutes to visit the impressive gardens and architecture showcased at Villa Serbelloni and Villa Melzi.Villa Carlotta enjoys a quiet, secluded and picturesque spot on the edge of a village just 10 minutes drive inland from Lake Como. The village centre with its restaurants and supermarket is just a five-minute walk away. There’s also a bike hire shop for getting out and exploring the naturally beautiful area on two wheels. And scenic walks start from the doorstep at Villa Carlotta, with unspoilt countryside and atmospheric woods to discover.
Drive to lakeside Menaggio in 10 minutes and enjoy all the facilities on offer at the lido. There are some swimming pools, a sandy beach, volleyball and various activities for children. You may wish to play a few rounds on the 18-hole mini golf course by the lake, with a large golf course located just outside the town. Lake Como is also the perfect place to try a range of watersports, such as kayaking and water-skiing.
Another Villa Carlotta is just a short drive down Lake Como in Tremezzo. This palatial villa is home to a gorgeous botanical garden and extensive art collection. The town of Bellagio also has a couple of lovely villas to visit, including Villa Serbelloni and Villa Melzi. Villa Serbelloni dates back to the 15th century and Villa Melzi has gardens that you’ll love getting lost in. Just the 45-minute ferry ride from Como to Bellagio is an experience in itself.
The city of Como is awash with historic buildings, such as its famous Gothic cathedral, and boasts a pretty lakeside promenade for laid-back strolls.
